Lower Close With Little Data

With little economic data to motivate investors, the markets closed lower with the Dow falling 67 points to 16,351. Nasdaq dropped 27 points to 4307.

On the upside

OXiGENE (Nasdaq: OXGN) reported positive results from a Phase 2 study of Avastin to treat recurring ovarian cancer.

The Food and Drug Administration determined that Senomyx's (Nasdaq: SNMX) Sweetmyx food flavoring was safe.

Global Hunter Securities upgraded Knightbridge Tankers (Nasdaq: VLCCF) from a Neutral rating to a Buy rating.

On the downside


Analysts expect Real Goods Solar (Nasdaq: RGSE) to report a loss for the fourth quarter next week.

Sunshine Heart (Nasdaq: SSH) reported a wider than expected loss for the fourth quarter.

Bridgepoint Education (NYSE: BPI) fell to a greater than expected loss for the fourth quarter.

In the broad market, declining issues outpaced advancers by a margin of more than 2 to 1 on the NYSE and by more than 5 to 2 on Nasdaq. The broader S&P 500 fell 9 points to 1867. Bitcoin rose $8.87 or 1.44% to $624.53.
