Medline Re-Imagines Science and Nature at SAWC Spring 2014

Chronic wounds affect 6.5 million patients in the United States. Recognizing the need to create solutions for this population and help improve patient care, Medline Industries, Inc. is showcasing a number of cutting edge solutions at the Symposium on Advanced Wound Care (SAWC) Spring 2014 conference in Orlando, April 23-27. Medline (Booth 501) will highlight an array of products that uniquely fuse science and nature.

Opticell Ag+™ Gelling Fiber

Opticell Ag+ effectively manages moisture and bioburden in even the most complex and irregular wound environments. Utilizing unique Chytoform™ fiber technology, Opticell Ag+ achieves a unique balance between strength and conformability. In addition, Opticell Ag+ creates an optimal wound healing environment, ensuring intimate contact with the dressing and its silver ions.

“For the population of patients I treat suffering from diabetic wounds, I’ve discovered that Opticell Ag+ has been exceptional in its absorptive properties with dry to heavily exudative wounds,” said Naz Wahab, MD, FAPWCA, who specializes in wound care and hyperbaric medicine. “While treatments are still ongoing, managing bioburden from diabetic wounds known for polymicrobial bioburden will inadvertently help decrease exudate.”

Marathon® Liquid Skin Protectant

Marathon is a non-stinging barrier film designed to provide skin protection for a variety of conditions and can help guard vulnerable skin from adhesives, friction and incontinence. It forms a fully flexible protective layer over intact or damaged skin. Marathon, a cyanoacrylate skin protectant, has a variety of uses and was recently featured in the March 2014 issue of International Wound Journal. The findings point to the positive management of compromised skin and cost effective results.

“Skin breakdown is common across the entire spectrum of health settings and in the long-term care setting specifically, we know that moisture damage and friction are common,” said author and researcher Kevin Woo, PhD, RN, FAPWCA. “When looking at compromised skin, early indicators show that a cyanoacrylate skin protectant is a viable alternative to traditional foam dressing and may help reduce the incidence of skin breakdown at a greater cost-savings.”

Medline is also showcasing a number of cutting edge solutions at SAWC Spring 2014 including:

  • Revitalon™: Helps the healing process in the most chronic wounds including those at risk of amputations through this wound covering made of human amniotic tissue. The option of a multi-dot application allows for versatile use of the amniotic tissue at a significantly lower cost.
  • TheraHoney®: Made with 100 percent medical-grade Manuka honey, this sterile wound dressing possesses unique properties that help create a moist wound environment conducive to wound healing. The moist wound environment promotes autolytic or natural debridement that gently removes necrotic tissue and helps reduce wound odor.
  • Medline Remedy® Advanced Skin Care System: Nourishes compromised skin and is formulated to be non-sensitizing, non-irritating and hypoallergenic. Natural oils and emollients help moisturize skin. The full line includes skin moisturizers, skin cleansers and protectants.
  • Clinicians will also present findings on the subjects of relieving pressure on vulnerable heels, skin protectant pastes, and foam border dressings based on experiences with Medline products and solutions on Friday, April 25.
