PRLog - May 12, 2014 - MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- Light electric vehicle innovator Future Motion signs supply agreement with Electric Torque Machines to provide custom designed hub motors for Onewheel, the world’s first self-balancing electric skateboard.

Onewheel, which will be commercially available in fall of 2014, uses ETM’s patented transverse-flux motor (TFM) technology to power their product without use of gear-reducers or belts. The development of ETM’s revolutionary transverse-flux technology allows Onewheel to incorporate the motor inside the single tire, providing smooth performance and a simple sleek design.

“We are proud to enter an exclusive supply agreement with ETM. Their motor technology is truly innovative and way ahead of the pack in terms of continuous power density and build quality for ground vehicles,” said Kyle Doerksen, CEO of Future Motion. “ETM is a great fit for us because we need high torque in a small diameter to achieve self-balancing performance in a lightweight, portable vehicle. Ultimately ETM's technology lets us deliver the best possible ride experience.”

“Future Motion’s leading-edge technology and vision is inspiring to the team here at ETM,” said Mike Pierce, CEO of Electric Torque Machines. “We’re excited to see Onewheel and ETM combining cutting edge products with innovative motor technology for commuters and outdoor enthusiasts alike”.

Onewheel, which launched at CES in 2014, raised over $630,000 during its 20 day Kickstarter campaign. To accommodate demand, Onewheel is taking pre-orders on its website, www.rideonewheel.com and is now transitioning from design to manufacturing.

ETM motors are distinctly different than conventional motors in that TFM uses simple toroidal coils with the stator ‘wrapped’ around the coil while conventional motors require copper coils that encircle individual stator teeth. By using a single toroidal coil per phase, ETM motors enable high pole counts with very low winding resistance. This results in motors that produce unusually high continuous torque per size and weight, while matching or exceeding industry leading peak torque output.
