Baron and Budd Investigating Hip Replacement Lawsuits

Lawyers at Baron and Budd are now investigating hip replacement lawsuits involving certain metal-on-metal hip implants from various manufacturers. These implants have been linked to serious health problems, including nervous system damage, metal poisoning and infections. Thousands of lawsuits have been filed across the nation by plaintiffs who allege they have developed serious health problems after receiving certain metal-on-metal hip replacement implants.

“While these hip replacement implants were billed by manufacturers as a better option than traditional implants with greater mobility, many patients have suffered serious complications related to these implants,” said Brittany Clark, lawyer at Baron and Budd.

Manufacturers of the hip replacement implants under investigation include Wright Medical, DePuy Orthopaedics (a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson), Smith and Nephew, Stryker, Zimmer and Biomet. In many instances, patients receiving these devices have required additional extensive surgical procedures to help mitigate damage from the implants. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Safety Communication on January 17, 2013 stating that metal-on-metal devices present unique risks – on top of the risks associated with hip implants in general.

In 2012, the FDA found that there was very little reason to use metal-on-metal implants because they carried too high a risk for failure. DePuy, Stryker, Zimmer and Wright Medical are among the manufacturers that have issued device recalls in recent years due to high failure rates and other complications.

Some of the risks associated with metal-on-metal hip replacement implants include:

  • Metal poisoning (metallosis) caused by metal particles coming loose and being absorbed by the blood, resulting in problems such as thyroid and kidney issues
  • Loosening and instability of the device
  • Calcification of tissue
  • Bone fractures and the death of bone material (avascular necrosis)
  • Severe pain and inflammation
  • Infections
  • Nervous system damage
  • Stiffness and loss of mobility (known as hip impingement syndrome)
