Stion, Hannah Solar, and Washington Gas Energy Systems Partner to Provide Low Cost, Clean Solar Energy for Water Treatment Plant in Georgia

Stion, a leading U.S.-based manufacturer of high efficiency thin-film solar modules and provider of photovoltaic solar solutions, announced today a 1 MW solar array at the Vidalia Water Treatment Facility in Vidalia, Ga., powered by Stion.

Washington Gas Energy Systems assembled a team of best-in-class partners that leveraged Stion’s high-quality, American-made solar modules and Hannah Solar’s development and EPC experience. Stion’s industry leading warm temperature performance provides a significant energy yield advantage over crystalline silicon solar modules, especially in the warm climate of Georgia. This is the first of several Washington Gas Energy Systems-owned projects using Stion’s modules.

“We performed a full system analysis with Stion and it was clear that their modules provided more value to Hannah Solar and our customer. The total system cost was lower and it produced more energy than the other options we considered,” said Pete Marte, CEO and President of Hannah Solar.

This solar project, operating since February, was made possible by the Georgia Power Advanced Solar Initiative (GPASI) and will be owned and operated by Washington Gas Energy Systems. The company was awarded a contract with Georgia Power to buy 100 percent of the power produced by the solar array for the next 20 years. The design consists of more than 7,000 Stion Elevation solar modules connected to transformerless inverters. The power plant provides clean energy, harnessed from the sun, to power the treatment plant and the neighboring homes. The Vidalia project is part of Stion’s growing portfolio of installations at water treatment facilities.

“Stion is proud to partner with Hannah Solar and Washington Gas Energy Systems to deliver projects that provide a clean, low-cost source of electricity for Georgia residents,” said Jim McGrath, Stion VP of Sales for North America.

"The Washington Gas Energy Systems team is pleased to have completed another project through the Georgia Power Advanced Solar Initiative, generating emissions-free solar power and expanding the state’s renewable energy capacity in Partnership with Stion and Hannah Solar,” said Sanjiv Mahan, COO, Washington Gas Energy Systems.
