PRLog - Nov. 7, 2014 - In 2014, UNICEF conducted a situational analysis of children with disabilities in Belize. While some findings were expected, other situations were not previously well known and overall it was found that disabled children are greatly lacking education and access to education in Belize.
Unfulfilled Rights
Especially for those living in rural areas, there is inadequate and sometimes completely absent support for education.
In some cases, parents don’t understand the importance of education and are not making their children attend school. In other cases, teachers and school administrators say they don’t want children with disabilities in their classes. Many teachers say this is because their classrooms are already full and the attention they would need to give to a disabled student would cause neglect of the other students.
Overall, disabled children in Belize are being left behind because it is simply too much of a challenge for them to reach school, let alone participate in educational activities. The lack of transportation available to these children and their families is a great hindrance to disabled children being able to receive an education.
What’s Being Done?
Thanks to UNICEF findings, more than ever is now being done to help disabled children in Belize. The Inspiration Center was recently constructed to provide education and medical services to disabled children in need.
