What You Need To Know About Freelance Writing

In 2012 while I was still a second year university student, I decided to try working part time freelance writing to earn some cash. I had seen a few of my friends and classmates doing it, but they were earning so little, which was sort of discouraging. However, being dependent on my parents was not a comfortable thought, so I decided to give it a try and take whatever I got from freelance writing, after all, there was nothing to lose.

My freelance writing start

To start off, I worked for a friend of mine, who had an Essay-Writer account at the time: the pay was so dismal that I gave up working for him within a month and a half.

I enjoyed writing, so I decided to try finding another online website that would give me an opportunity to work as a freelancer, and earn a reasonable amount for my efforts. At first, I came across many sham sites, which was really frustrating.

Whereas as I would work and not get paid in some of the sites, I would end up being paid very little for a lot of work (mostly essays) in others. Although there were quite a number of challenges, I decided to use them as experiences.

What to do next?

I spent the next week trying to think of other ways I could make money, and that is when it hit me: what if I could find a site where I could offer other freelance writing services apart from essay- writing? Surely, there hard to be other sites where I could use my talent to the fullest: I had always enjoyed writing short stories, blogs and articles, which a majority of my friends appreciated.

Surfing the Web

While browsing the web, I came across numerous inspiring stories of individuals who had started small, and ended up changing their lives completely through freelancing. I found this to be very motivating, and decided to give it another try. A good number of the articles had suggested genuine websites to try out, and I did.

Went for my passion

I started small in a number of sites like Gig-Buck and Fivesquid, where I wrote short articles (between 300 and 400 words) as well as short stories for various clients. Things had started looking up, and the more I worked for my clients, the more they helped me along the way. I would get feedbacks, both positive and negative, which helped me understand my weaknesses and strengths, and thus better myself.

After working for about three months on the new sites, I realized the need to find books and short booklets on how to become a better self-employed writer, and thus offer better services. I was able to find a good number of books, which taught me on ways I could improve the services I rendered.

Study Time

For instance, I learned of the need to avoid plagiarism and how to communicate with the clients. I realized that I needed to treat clients well, and listen to their concerns whenever there were any. This gave me an idea, and for any inconvenience I caused any of my clients, I would give them a discount on the next job they gave me. Moreover, I would provide some of them a free article once a month to show my appreciation.

The Right Move

This proved to be a wise step in the right way since it won me a good number of loyal buyers. Moreover, a good number of my buyers started recommending me to other buyers, which has helped me grow gradually over the years. I can say without any doubts that working as a freelancer has been a positive step in my life. I would also encourage those who feel that they have something unique to offer to give it a try.

Personally, I would give the following tips to those interested in working as freelancers:

• Always give the client value for their money

• Always avoid plagiarism (unless stated otherwise)

• Always listen to the client, and tend to their concerns

• Treat each client with respect

• Do not mind starting small

• Always keep the line of communication with the client(s) open
