Resilient Systems CTO Bruce Schneier Releases New Book “Data and Goliath: The Hidden Battles to Capture Your Data and Control Your World”

Resilient Systems (formerly Co3 Systems), the leading Incident Response Platform (IRP) provider, has announced that Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and world-renowned security and privacy expert Bruce Schneier released his newest book, Data and Goliath: The Hidden Battles to Capture Your Data and Control Your World [W. W. Norton & Company; March 2, 2015; $27.95 hardcover].

In Data and Goliath, Schneier discusses the myriad ways that personal identity and behavior are monitored in the modern world, and the indirect effects that surveillance can have on all forms of expression and freedom. He concludes with an outline of the technological, legal, and social solutions that can help shape a more equal, private, and secure world.

“The book explores surveillance in the world of the Internet: who does it, why, what the harms are, and what to do about it,” said Schneier. “My goal in writing it was to understand the role surveillance plays in society today, and to explain that privacy is not dead. There are things we can do to protect our freedoms and liberties. They're not easy. They're both technical and political. And we have to start now.”

Organizations play an important role in Schneier’s vision of the secure and private world of the future. With global cyberattacks top of mind in both the public and private sectors, the idea of “resilience” continues to emerge as the standard for organizations to strive for. Resilience puts equal importance on human and tactical components to assess and manage incidents as they occur, starting with an incident response strategy that includes the entire organization – from HR and marketing to the executive team and IT. The concept of resiliency is core to enterprises’ ability to survive in the face of today’s threats, including those outlined in Data and Goliath.

“Throughout his career, Bruce has pushed the forefront of cybersecurity and privacy, and he continually defines how our industry addresses its most pressing and important issues,” said John Bruce, CEO and Co-Founder, Resilient Systems. “We congratulate Bruce for adding another significant, thought-provoking book to his resume.”

Schneier, who joined Resilient Systems in early 2014, is the author of thirteen books, including Liars and Outliers: Enabling the Trust Society Needs to Thrive. Along with his Crypto-Gram newsletter and blog, which have a quarter of a million subscribers, he is a frequent contributor to Time, The Atlantic, The Guardian, Wired, and other publications. He is a fellow at Harvard University’s Berkman Center and serves on the Board of Directors for the Electronic Frontier Foundation.
