Boston Latin Students Open New Paths to Global Education with Study Abroad Scholarships from CIEE: Council on International Educational Exchange

CIEE: Council on International Educational Exchange today announced Boston Latin is one of just 50 high schools nationwide to receive Global Navigator Scholarships for 2015. Select schools that demonstrate their dedication to expanding global education will receive $20,000 each in scholarships to enable more of their students to study abroad this summer as part of CIEE’s Global Navigator Scholarship program.

Boston Latin School is a college preparatory school with a rigorous academic program serving an economically and culturally diverse population of students. The Global Navigator Scholarships complement the institution’s mission to prepare its students to be both productive citizens in a democracy and responsible adults who have an awareness of global issues.

“Boston Latin School continues to adapt to anticipate and meet the changing demands and challenges of the times, as it has for more than 375 years. Study abroad is one of those life changing experiences that will uniquely support our students to participate in an increasingly global society,” said Boston Latin School History Program Director Thomas Kennelly. “Our students have already begun to benefit from the recent launch of the Clough Center for Global Understanding, which will enable our students and faculty to travel internationally for global experiences in academics and community service.”

Christine Kelly, program director for foreign language at the school, adds, “The sort of cultural immersion that our students experience through study abroad can’t be underestimated. It gives them exactly the sort of exposure to the ideas and values that Boston Latin School embraces, not just helping our students develop their language skills but reaching beyond to develop global competencies.”

CIEE offers 30 summer abroad programs for high school students in 16 destinations around the world. All programs combine cultural immersion and academics in language and culture, service and leadership, and content studies. The language and culture programs address seven different languages: Spanish, French, Mandarin Chinese, German, Italian, Japanese, and Arabic.

The new Global Navigator Scholarship program recognizes a high school’s commitment to delivering an exemplary, integrated global education, with a special emphasis on second language acquisition and embracing intercultural skills and competencies. Individual student awards will be made on a combination of financial need, merit, and passion for the program themes – language, science, arts, service, leadership, and cultural exchange. Specific programs include learning about children’s rights and education, public health, and marine and environmental science at diverse CIEE locations in China, the Dominican Republic, Bonaire, and Botswana. The Global Navigator Scholarships are endowed by donor Sheron Long, former CEO of Hampton-Brown, a pre-K-12 education publisher of language and literacy materials, in partnership with CIEE.

“These scholarships acknowledge Boston Latin School’s educational leadership and in particular its commitment to making all things possible for their students.” said James P. Pellow, Ed.D., president and chief executive officer of CIEE. “Through these awards we are eliminating the traditional study abroad barriers of cost, curriculum, and culture. Students will acquire the knowledge and skills needed to become successful global citizens.”
