GSA Green Proving Ground Study Validates Fluid Dynamics’ Scale-Prevention Technology

By: Get News

Alpharetta, Georgia – July 22, 2015 – Fluid Dynamics is pleased to announce that a General Services Administration Green Proving Ground study has validated a water scale prevention technology that has been proven in Europe for over forty years. The proprietary technology was developed by Fluid Dynamics and has been proven to be a solution to the “hard water” problem. Their technological solution is chemical free, salt free and requires no power. Water borne calcium deposits are a plague to industrial, commercial and residential users of water.

During a recent interview, Rob James, Chief Visionary Officer for Fluid Dynamics USA, made these comments, “Scale build-up is a serious problem and traditional attempts of dealing with hard water have proven ineffective, costly or environmentally damaging,” he continued, “This GSA study confirms for North America what we already knew from a million-plus installations worldwide — the simplest design is usually the best solution.”

Commonplace hard water solutions count on the use of intricate systems requiring salts, chemicals or a source of electromagnetic energy. This totally green solution presented by Fluid Dynamics is amazingly simple while very effective. The line that carries the water is integrated with their catalytic technology. The water simply flows over their proprietary metal alloy and the natural turbulence of the passing water causes bicarbonate and calcium ions to form calcium carbonate as aragonite, as opposed to calcite. Calcite bonds to surfaces, but aragonite remains suspended in water.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory conducted the field study during 2013-2014. The results firmly established that Fluid Dynamics’ revolutionary technology will prevent scale build-up, but also cures previous scaling over time. Hard water in water heating systems causes severe problems to water heating systems. Calcium deposits cause a range of problems from higher energy consumption to complete system breakdown. This full report is available at http://www.gsa.gov/portal/content/211883, with the efficacy of the technology supported by the conclusion of the report:

“The technology has demonstrated its effectiveness in this study and should be considered for adoption by GSA facilities that are experiencing scaling issues in water heating systems,” as stated in the report. Also mentioned in the report was the fact that the simple payback period was less than 1 year. The Fluid Dynamics technology offers a wide range of sizes to treat a wide range of applications. Their solution is scalable working in systems from a quarter inch domestic water line to a forty-eight inch industrial system.

The company reports that their scale prevention products have been sold in the United Kingdom and Europe since 1973, and have been available in North America since 2009. The product range has been marketed under the names Scaletron, Limetron, Housetron and Colloid-A-Tron. Fluid Dynamics is the world’s oldest and largest manufacturer of catalytic hard water treatment and scale prevention systems, with global offices located in the U.K. and North American headquarters in Atlanta, GA.

About the GSA Green Proving Ground Program:

GSA’s Green Proving Ground (GPG) program represents an innovative response to Executive Order 13514. To meet target sustainability goals and enable the realization of net zero buildings, federal agencies must develop effective ways of reducing energy use. GPG leverages GSA’s real estate portfolio to evaluate innovative sustainable building technologies and provide recommendations on their deployment. By devoting research to technologies in the pre or early-commercial stages of development, GPG facilitates and accelerates the transition between bench-scale technology and commercial viability.

Working with DOE’s National Laboratories, GPG evaluates technologies in a real-world context. Project reports are developed by the combined efforts of GPG and the national laboratories and provide credible, detailed information about product performance that is pivotal in determining the technology’s success in the marketplace.
