LOS ANGELES, CA – Kids in the House experts present parents with teen driving statistics and what the numbers mean for their children. From crash fatality rates to drunk driving data, specialists let parents know what is important.
“Car crashes kill more teens than guns, drugs, alcohol, and suicide combined,” said Kids in the House specialist, author, and teen driving expert Timothy Smith. “Nearly 60% of 16 year olds are gonna be involved in some kind of fender bender or car crash in the first 12 months of their driving.”
The good news, according to Smith, is that 80% of these crashes are caused by driver error, which parents can help teens reduce through eliminating distractions.
Cell phones remain one of the most dangerous distractions.
“A cell phone impairs the brain function very similarly to having a .08% blood level, which is legally drunk,” Smith said. “Just talking on a cell phone quadruples the crash risk for a teen driver, and it doesn’t matter if it’s hands-off or not.”
Texting while driving increases the risk of collision by 43 times. Reducing or eliminating a teen’s use of a cell phone while driving is on of the best ways to combat accidents.
A number of other distractions add to teenage crash risk as well. When teens drive at night, they are twice as likely to be involved in a fatal car crash, according to Jan Withers, a Kids in the House expert and National President of Mothers Against Drunk Driving. The majority of accidents take place between the hours of 12 A.M. and 3 A.M., said Kids in the House expert and Director of UCLA’s Parenting and Children’s Friendship Program Cynthia G. Whitham, LCSW.
Additional teenage passengers can cause the likelihood of a car accident to skyrocket. For each kid added to a teen’s car, the crash risk jumps by 50%.
While teen driving statistics can paint a scary picture, drunk driving statistics have improved. According to Ralph S. Blackman, Kids in the House expert and President and CEO of the Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility (FAAR), federal numbers on drunk driving accidents have reached all time lows. In the past 20 to 30 years, the numbers have been cut in half. This is especially true of teen drinking and driving statistics, which have gone down by more than 70%.
