Rooter Hero Plumbing Explains New Residential Water Heater Standards in Orange County, CA

The Orange, California-based company, Rooter Hero Plumbing of Orange County, wants to make sure residents are aware of recent changes that affect water heater manufacturing. These changes are designed to meet new national standards and will have an impact on the price and availability of water heaters purchased after April 15, 2015.

During the spring of 2015, The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) released new water heater regulations. The DOE regulates the minimum energy efficiency requirements for most residential appliances, including water heaters. Revised regulations require higher Energy Factor ratings on all residential water heaters in Orange County, CA, and across the nation. All water heaters are affected regardless if they are electric, oil, gas, and tankless residential water heaters. Due to the new minimum energy efficiency requirements, consumers may see a slight increase in prices for water heaters manufactured after April 2015, but, ultimately, consumers will save money because of the appliance's energy conservation.

These changes have many homeowners wondering if their water heaters are up to par and if they'll need to buy a new water heater. "The new guidelines do not mean a person has to buy a new water heater," states Jessica Perrault, spokesperson for Rooter Hero Plumbing of Orange County. "However, if a person is interested in purchasing a new water heater that meets the DOE guidelines, it's important that he or she is aware of the manufacturing date and is knowledgeable of what changes have been made to the new appliances."

Actual changes to residential water heaters depend on the specific water heater in question. In some cases, appliances installed in the last year or so may very well meet these stringent requirements. Electric water heaters for instance that are more than 55 gallons in volume are required to use an integrated heat pump technology in order to meet higher energy efficient levels. Gas heaters that are more than 55 gallons may require full condensing capabilities.

"It's confusing," states Perrault. "But we want to let area homeowners know that we can come and check their water heaters, and if a new one is needed, we offer a number of quality models, all of which meet these new requirements."

Perrault urges all homeowners to call their local plumber to schedule an evaluation and to learn more about how heating water can be done more cost and energy efficiently.
