Higher Open As Investors Digest Yellen’s Comments

The markets opened higher with the Dow gaining 57 points to 16,279 as investors continued to digest comments from Federal Reserve chair Janet Yellen. Nasdaq rose 13 points to 4320. 

On the upside 

BG Medicine (Nasdaq: BGMD) narrowed fourth quarter losses more than expected and announced the receipt of a patent for Galectin-3 and cardiac resynchronization therapy.

MagneGas (Nasdaq: MNGA) will supply fuel for torch cutting in four demolition projects.

Synta Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: SNTA) reported positive interim results from the ENCHANT-1 trial of ganetespib in treating metastatic breast cancer.

On the downside

Shares of Walter Energy (NYSE: WLT) extended its losses. 

Agenus (Nasdaq: AGEN) reported disappointing results from a late stage study of a lung cancer treatment that uses Agenus’ SQ-21 Stimulon vaccine adjuvant.

Cinedigm (Nasdaq: CIDM) priced its public offering of 10.2 million common shares at the discounted price of $2.70 per share.

In the broad market, declining issues outpaced advancers by a margin of nearly 5 to 4 on the NYSE while advancers edged out decliners by more than 9 to 7 on Nasdaq. The broader S&P 500 rose 6 points to 1867. Bitcoin lost $22.65 or 3.72% to $585.62.
