Army Veteran and Aliquippa, Pennsylvania native writes a fictional family drama inspired by hometown church controversy
LANHAM, Md. - Dec. 21, 2015 - PRLog -- Pamela Hart Vines grew up in Aliquippa, PA, and went on to serve 20 years in the military. She recalls a time early in her career when she returned home to visit her hometown church with her parents.

At the time, in the mid-to-late 1980s, her church had a new minister and he was at the center of controversy. He was discovered not have any of the educational and ministerial credentials he proclaimed. To get back at the congregation for ousting him, he broke into the church and vandalized it. The community was shaken by the incident.

Vines always remembered that story and thought to herself, "What family circumstances would cause a person to turn out like that?" As a result, the main character of her novel was born.

The novel Born of Sin is a mainstream fiction work set in Pittsburgh in the early 1980s. The story follows a complex and layered African-American family dealing with the universal effects of betrayal, unrequited love, and redemption.

Vines said the story is absolute fiction, having no resemblance, intentional or otherwise, to the pastor's accounts that inspirited her novel. She wrote the initial sketch of the story years ago but didn't begin writing the novel until years after her retirement from the military.

"I come from an artistic and creative family, so writing is part of my DNA," Vines said. "I always looked forward to the time in my life at which I could be a full-time writer. I'm currently living my dream."

The novel debuted at number one on Amazon on December 1st in the ebook and print versions in the African Amercian family drama catagories.

"I'm proud to say it continues to perform well on the bookseller site. People are enjoying the story," Vines said.

In Born of Sin, her main character is conceived out of wedlock and “born of sin.” Jacob (Jay Dee) Dewitt suffers deeply at the hands of his resentful stepfather. Away from home, alone on the streets of Pittsburgh, Jacob lies about his age and assumes a new identity. Intelligent and ambitious, he soon gets recruited by the city’s crime organization. His yearning for acceptance take him places he might otherwise avoid. Jacob embraces his new family that consists of an up-and-coming Madame and other drug runners.

As the story ensues, he grows up fast. It doesn’t take long for the big boss to discover Jacob’s quick mind and other talents. Despite his rising status, Jacob yearns for a righteousness the streets can’t provide.

To fill the void, he attends the University of Pittsburgh and uses his gifted knowledge about the Bible to encourage his crew. Word of mouth spreads and miraculous things happen to the people he helps. Unfortunately, Jacob discovers that church and crime are an unholy union.

Alternating between the fictional town of Edgeboro, North Carolina, in 1976 and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in the early 1980s, Jacob must choose between leaving the street family that embraced him and seeking a legitimate life with the family that disowned him.
