Hastings & Hastings Calls on Drivers to Stay Off Their Phones

Drivers who stay glued to their phones are a common cause of catastrophic car collisions. Simply encouraging drivers to stay off of their phones while behind the wheel of a car could go a long way towards saving lives.

It has been reported by the National Safety Council that 1.6 million crashes each year are a direct result of drivers who were on their cellphones. Eliminating cellphone use during commutes could save thousands of lives and prevent millions of dollars in annual property damage.

Studies run by the National Safety Council have shown that answering a text message takes an average of 5 seconds. A car travelling at just 55 mph will travel the distance of a football field in this span of time. It is impossible to predict everything that will happen while driving. It is of the utmost importance that drivers apply their undivided attention to the road.

Texting and driving has proven to be particularly dangerous for young, inexperienced driver. The National Safety Council has reported that teen drivers are almost 4 times more likely to be involved in an accident while talking on the phone or texting.
