Frontier Pilots Vote to Merge With ALPA

Pilots at Denver-based Frontier Airlines will be the latest group to join the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA), the world’s largest pilots’ union. In voting that concluded today, 93 percent of Frontier pilots cast votes in favor of a merger with ALPA, with 93 percent of eligible pilots voting. An independent union, the Frontier Airlines Pilots Association (FAPA), currently represents the airline’s 1,000 pilots.

“We are extremely pleased to welcome the Frontier pilots to the ALPA family and look forward to working with them to achieve a new contract,” said ALPA President Capt. Tim Canoll. “This decisive vote makes it clear that Frontier pilots understand that when pilots stand together and present a strong, unified voice, it benefits both them as individuals and the profession as a whole.”

The vote marks the third time in three years that pilots for a major U.S. airline have endorsed ALPA as their new bargaining representative. Pilots at JetBlue Airways joined the Association in 2014, and their counterparts at Virgin America voted in ALPA last year.

The merger must be ratified by ALPA’s Executive Board when it meets on May 18–19 and will become effective on June 1. The legal representation rights will transfer from FAPA to ALPA upon formal action by the National Mediation Board, which is expected around the same time.

Founded in 1931, ALPA is the world’s largest pilot union, representing more than 52,000 pilots at 30 airlines in the United States and Canada. Visit the ALPA website at www.alpa.org or follow us on Twitter @WeAreALPA.
