Dr. F. Michael Walsh Is Named Chief Medical Officer of Aurora Diagnostics

Aurora Diagnostics, the leading independent specialized pathology company focused on anatomic pathology and laboratory medicine integrating cancer diagnostics for enhanced patient care, announced today that it has promoted Dr. F. Michael Walsh to Chief Medical Officer.

“Dr. Walsh is an experienced physician leader, and we are excited by the vision he brings to this important role,” said Daniel D. Crowley, President, Chairman and CEO of Aurora Diagnostics. “He will lead Aurora’s many physician-related initiatives, working closely with Aurora’s Medical Advisory Committees, and help drive the development of a robust personalized medicine program.”

Dr. Walsh will continue to serve as chair of Aurora’s Surgical Pathology Medical Advisory Committee. He joined Aurora Diagnostics in October 2015 when Aurora acquired Laboratory Medicine of Greater Toledo, which he founded.

“I am delighted to take on this new role,” said Dr. Walsh. “Aurora Diagnostics is uniquely positioned to be the leader in the integration of clinical diagnostics for enhanced patient care via its national group of anatomic and clinical pathologists. As medicine rapidly advances with amazing technologies, Aurora physicians are well positioned to translate complex diagnostic information to optimize the effectiveness of treatment plans. They have access to molecular and genetic testing conducted under their direction in Aurora facilities. Their local relationships and involvement in hospitals allow them to actively participate as valued members of clinical care teams. And, the scope and breadth of their collective training and experience creates an unparalleled internal consultation network to increase the accuracy of diagnoses. I know of no other organization that has Aurora's unique and expanding capabilities to integrate diagnostics and enhance patient care.”

Dr. Walsh has served as the Chairman of the Department of Pathology and Medical Director of the Clinical Laboratories for ProMedica Health Systems for 27 years and integrated 12 hospital laboratories into that health system. He is an active medical staff member at all ProMedica Hospitals, an affiliate staff member of the Tomisch Institute of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine of the Cleveland Clinic, and a Clinical Associate Professor of Pathology at the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Health Sciences (formerly the Medical College of Ohio).

He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Notre Dame and completed medical school at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He also has a Master of Business Administration in Management from Farleigh Dickinson University. Dr. Walsh’s training in pathology took place at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., where he was a Chief Resident of Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, and the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. in chemical pathology/clinical chemistry.

Dr. Walsh is certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic, Clinical and Chemical Pathology and the American Board of Medical Management as a Certified Physician Executive.
