What made you write The Garden of God's Heart? The book was born out of my burgeoning love for contemplation. Largely housebound by my chronic illness taking a turn for the worse, my little garden became my cloister and I began looking more closely and prayerfully at the abundance of beauty that was right there before my eyes. The only way to write about the joy it gave me seemed to be in short bursts of poetic prose, each piece of creation wrapped up in close-knit words like the layers of petals around a rose. One thing was considered with its Maker every day, each teaching me more about an aspect of God’s universe of love.​

Given your strong faith, who is God for you? God is like coming home. He is the one who leans over the gate, always waiting for me to arrive with a smile breaking out on His face as soon as He sees me. Yet, at the same time, He is the vastness of love; the unquantifiable, indefinable being: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, who interweaves and sustains His created universe. God is everything true, everything good and holy, all understanding and every way of being, redeeming everything and calling us all to Himself. 

What is it like to have a personal relationship with Christ? Jesus is the first person I talk to about anything. Along with my husband, He is the one whose opinion matters more than that of anyone else. His wisdom and grace are my priceless touchstones.

What is the greatest grace you have received? The ability to persevere through my physical illness, weakness, and disability. To carry on and be given gifts to use and share, even though many of the world’s values might dismiss me. His grace sustains and holds me, even through seemingly unanswered prayers.

Who has God been for you? My anchor, my focal point, mother and father, listening friend, teacher, guide, the one who holds me and values me. The One who never lets me down and the One who leads me into stillness and depth; into mystery, but also into laughter and calm delight.

What have been the greatest obstacles for you, in your relationship with Christ? Probably the same things that have been my greatest teachers: frustration, waiting, illness, discipline; wondering why, when awful things have happened. Also staying when I wanted to go, going when I wanted to stay, and finding out the hard way what love really is and is not. In the end, it has been about finding the faith and strength to trust. 

Why do you so desire others to know Him? Beginning to know God is like having found the best and most beautiful garden on earth: cool and green, and full of wonders. You just want others to see it too! Why should anyone have to miss out on the beauty and majesty of such loving kindness? The more true disciples the Lord has, the better for everyone, as the Kingdom begins to transform our hearts and our world. 

How do you wish to meet God when the time comes? As a gentle enveloping of love, a release into His heart, which is our true home. But as long as I do meet Him, the form does not matter.

What do you wish to impart to others? God is greater and better than we can ever imagine in our smallness. The best way is always His way and it is always love.
