New car sales are solid, but they’re not as high as they used to be. In fact, most auto makers have reported considerable sales drop-offs compared to 2015. Seeking a way to juice their numbers and get back into the game, new car dealerships have started offering some significant discounts. In fact, the average discount on a new vehicle is currently just under $4,000—a historically high number. In a new statement to the press, Get My Auto explains the implications of these major discounts.

“New car dealerships have been struggling, and now they are offering these big discounts to entice consumers back to the showroom,” says the Get My Auto press release. “This might be a little misleading, though, because even with the discount, the cost of a new automobile is still quite high.” In fact, the average cost of a new vehicle is currently well over $30,000—also an all-time high.

“There are a few different reasons why new cars are being offered with these steep discounts,” continues Get My Auto. “One is the competition faced from used car dealerships. A used vehicle can be just as reliable as a new one, and it’s often going to be available for half the price. Savvy consumers have caught on to this, which is why there are exiting the new car showroom in favor of the used vehicle lot.”

The election season may also have something to do with it. “There is a lot of uncertainty in the air right now, which means consumers are hesitant to make big purchases,” explains Get My Auto. “Again, they are heading to used car lots, where the deals are simply better.”

Though the new car industry is not yet in a desperate situation, Get My Auto says that some changes must be made.

“For the industry to remain viable, it must start to seriously compete with used car prices—and even a $4,000 discount doesn’t cut it,” Get My Auto concludes.
