Markets surge after Clinton cleared

The markets surged to a sharply higher open with the Dow leaping 264 points to 18,152 after the FBI said that Secretary Hillary Clinton would not face criminal charges related to her handling of emails. Nasdaq jumped 86 points to 5,132.


On the upside


The majority of a Food and Drug Administration advisory committee voted that the efficacy results of Cempra's (Nasdaq: CEMP) solithromycin outweighed the risks for community acquired bacterial pneumonia.


Ionis Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: IONS) reported positive results from an interim analysis of a Phase 3 study of SPINARZA in later onset spinal muscular atrophy.


Lending Club (NYSE: LC) reported a smaller than expected loss for the third quarter.


On the downside


Concordia International (Nasdaq: CXRX) fell to a loss for the third quarter.


EarthLink Holdings (Nasdaq: ELNK) will merge with Windstream Holdings (Nasdaq: WIN) in an all stock deal valued at approximately $1.1 billion.


Plug Power (Nasdaq: PLUG) widened third quarter losses more than expected.


In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of more than 11 to 1 on the NYSE and by more than 6 to 1 on Nasdaq. The broader S&P 500 leaped 32 points to 2,117. Bitcoin dropped $9 to $698.
