Woodlands Wines’ 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon ‘Matthew’ Wins Prestigious International Judges Trophy at Langton’s Margaret River Wine Show

By: Get News

Margaret River, Western Australia – Established in 1973 by David and Heather Watson, Woodland Wines was one of the first five wineries to be established in Margaret River. The vineyard has recently been awarded the prestigious International Judges Trophy at Langton’s Margaret River Wine Show for their 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon ‘Matthew’. Proving to be a top Margaret River winery, Woodlands Wines is finding acclaim as an industry leader.

The Woodlands vineyard is dry grown and maintained by hand using traditional methods. Woodlands Wines has grown considerably since its inception, with the original block planted in 1973 and the remainder planted in 1998. The established vines result in deeper roots, which reap the benefits of resistant crops with finer tannin, this contributes to the high quality of the wine.

The Wilyabrup Brook runs alongside the vineyard and creates a microclimate unique to Woodlands. The consistent soil temperature and high clay quality allow the grapes to retain their natural acidity. The vineyard employs high amounts of leaf plucking in the fruit zone, this reduces green characters in Cabernet. The slow released fertilisers and minimal synthetic chemicals used in vineyard yield a pure and delicious product, as do frequent quality and consistency trials. Picking fruit at the time of optimum flavour, rather than of best convenience or yield, Woodlands Wines is a vineyard that strives to produce the best quality product it can.

In the winery, all Woodlands wines are hand sorted and then spend up to two years in the finest French oak barrels for optimal taste and results. Each wine is made with minimal intervention and is blended with great care by the Watson family. Woodlands Wines is one of only ten Margaret River wineries with the highest possible rating from James Halliday. Not only that, but the Woodlands Cabernet Sauvignon was also rated ‘Outstanding’ in Langton’s Classification of Fine Wines. Along with the Jack Mann Medal being awarded to the founders, David and Heather Watson, the vineyard has had plenty of recognition for having a significant contribution to the wine industry in WA.

Since 1973, Woodlands Wines has been perfecting the art of winemaking, and today, the winery is still owned and run by the same family it was founded by. David and Heather’s two sons Stuart and Andrew Watson now make the wine and manage Woodlands.

As is becoming evident from their growing amounts of recognition, the methods employed by Woodlands Wines get results. To learn more about the company and its goals, click here.
