Scholarset, the leading academic social network of scientists, engineers and scholars based in China, announced its 2017 Research Ranking of Global Universities (RRGU) today. Harvard tops the list of 300 elite research universities, followed by MIT and Stanford. University of California, Berkeley moves up one position compared to 2016, and completes the top five with Johns Hopkins
Initiated in 2016, Scholarset's list is the first global university ranking of its kind, focusing on research universities worldwide. Distinct from previous ranking systems, RRGU puts its emphasis on research output, in particular research quality and draws on big data for multidimensional assessment. As such, its ranking provides a trustworthy reflection of the research performance and impact of world universities.
Universities in the United States continue to dominate the top 25 ranking, with No. 8 University of Oxford, No. 10 University of Toronto, No. 12 University of Cambridge, No. 20 University College London, and No. 22 Imperial College the only exceptions. University of Tokyo is the top Asia Pacific university ranked at No. 45, followed by No. 51 University of Melbourne, No. 52 University of Sydney, No. 55 National University of Singapore, and No. 60 University of Queensland.
China's elite two, Peking University and Tsinghua University, both rank in top 100 for the first time, reflecting the growing strength of Chinese academics. Other institutions from Mainland in the list include Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Fudan University, University of Science and Technology of China, Nanjing University, Sun Yat-Sen University, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Huazhong University of Science & Technology, Nankai University, and Shandong University.
Scholarset's RRGU is based on four key metrics derived from bibliometric databases: (1) total research output; (2) accumulated research impact; (3) research impact per unit research output; and (4) high impact research output. The final ranking represents a weighted result where quality is valued over quantity, though a threshold in total research output needs to be reached for a university to be considered.
