Frank Wefering, Sustainability Specialist, Joins GPI

Frank Wefering has joined Greenman-Pedersen, Inc. (GPI), an engineering and construction services firm, as Director of Sustainability in its Babylon and Manhattan, NY offices.

In his new position, Mr. Wefering is responsible for developing a new service line centered on sustainability planning and transportation. Mr. Wefering brings a new perspective to project management and planning to GPI, which is based on his international experience in sustainable transportation and urban mobility planning. He will complement existing GPI service lines and develop new projects which account for the rapid and fundamental changes currently observed in the transportation field, especially in relation to mobility in cities. Mr. Wefering complements GPI’s knowledge portfolio in areas including road safety/Vision Zero, transportation and health, mobility and access, smart cities, automated and connected vehicles, and integrated/sustainable urban mobility planning. He is also responsible for exploring international business and project opportunities for GPI in the wider field of sustainable transportation.

Mr. Wefering has more than 20 years of professional experience as a sustainability consultant, an urban mobility planner, and an economist. He has supported national and local governments as well as businesses worldwide in transportation planning. An internationally-experienced project manager, he has been focused on implementing innovative transportation solutions and improving quality of life in cities.

Prior to joining GPI, Mr. Wefering had his own consulting practice specializing in sustainable mobility and transportation for various public and private sector clients. His consulting assignments included strategy advisor to the NYC Department of Transportation and senior consultant to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs.

Some of the GPI’s recent transportation planning and design projects in the New York metropolitan area include the Ronkonkoma Hub for the Suffolk County Department of Economic Development and Planning, Wyandanch Plaza for the Town of Babylon, Green Infrastructure Design Services for NYC Economic Development, Select Bus Service (SBS) and Vision Zero Infrastructure Requirements Contract for NYC Dept. of Design & Construction; Citywide Transit Signal Priority (TSP) Projects for NYC Dept. of Transportation, numerous traffic engineering projects for the Port Authority of NY & NJ and bridge design projects for New York City Dept. of Transportation, among many others.

Mr. Wefering earned his Economic Graduate Degree from Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster, Germany, and his Master of Economics Degree from North Carolina State University. He currently resides in Bay Shore, New York with his wife and two children.
