Maine Wins Two International Awards for State Websites

Maine’s official state Web portal, www.Maine.gov, and the Bureau of Veterans’ Services website www.maine.gov/veterans/, have recently been recognized with two different international awards for outstanding achievement and service in the field of communication. The Maine.gov website was honored with a Hermes Creative Award by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals, while the Bureau of Veterans’ Services website received a Communicator Award of Distinction from the International Academy of Visual Arts.

“It’s always appreciated when the state receives recognition for its Web presence,” commented Governor Paul R. LePage. “A great deal of time and effort goes into creating and maintaining the state websites and online services. These awards demonstrate the commitment we have to deliver accurate and timely information about the variety of programs and resources available to Maine citizens.”

Maine.gov is a portal network of more than 150 online services and 368,000 pages of Web content that allows users to conduct official government business from their home or office. In 2016, new technologies were implemented including parallax scrolling on the homepage, a new state agency website template, and the deployment of four redesigned agency websites and 44 new and enhanced online services.

The Bureau of Veterans’ Services website serves as a centralized location for veterans and their family members to receive information about resources and services available. The website provides several unique features to make interaction with the Bureau easy, fast, and usable including the following features:

  • An interactive map of nearly 400 veteran resources throughout Maine that is searchable by various categories
  • A centralized calendar of statewide events for veterans
  • A detailed “primer” on the VA claims process that helps veterans understand how to navigate the federal benefits system and also provides answers to commonly-asked questions

Both Maine.gov and the Bureau of Veterans’ Services website were developed in partnership with InforME, the state’s digital government portal provider.

The Hermes Creative Award competition entrants come from a variety of corporate marketing and communication departments, advertising agencies, PR firms, graphic design shops, production companies, web and digital creators and freelancers. Creative award recipients are determined by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals, a panel of marketing, communication, advertising, public relations, media production, web and free-lance professionals.

The Communicator Awards are an annual competition honoring the best in advertising, corporate communications, public relations and identity work for print, video, interactive and audio. The awards are judged and overseen by the International Academy of the Visual Arts (IAVA), a 600+ member organization of leading professionals from various disciplines of the visual arts dedicated to embracing progress and the evolving nature of traditional and interactive media.
