Gerald L. McMahon Has Been Recognized as One of the Top in His Industry by the Expert Network©

Gerald L. Mr. McMahon outshines others in his field due to his extensive educational background, career longevity, and numerous awards and recognitions. In 1952, he enrolled at the University of Southern California on a Navy ROTC scholarship and graduated cum laude in 1956. He was then assigned as a naval aviator for three years before accepting a position as the Chief of Contracts for General Dynamics Corporation’s Centaur Space Vehicle Program. Mr. McMahon went on to pursue his Juris Doctor at night at the University of San Diego School of Law while maintaining his Chief of Contracts position. While in law school, he clerked at the firm which preceded Seltzer Caplan McMahon Vitek and has been with the firm since graduating summa cum laude with the highest grade-point average in his class in 1964. 

With more than 50 years dedicated to law, Mr. McMahon brings a wealth of knowledge to his industry, and in particular to his areas of specialization, litigation in a wide array of matters ranging from family law and real estate to professional liability and corporate defense. When asked why he decided to pursue a career in law, Mr. McMahon said:

"I could imagine no more challenging and rewarding career."

Over the course of his more than fifty-year career, Mr. McMahon has litigated over 100 trials involving cases ranging from eminent domain to personal injury law before juries, judges, arbitration panels, and administrative law judges. Though he has won numerous noteworthy cases, Mr. McMahon is most proud of his first high-profile case, a bitter divorce case he litigated only five years into his career. The case—in which he represented the head of a big furniture chain—lasted seven-and-a-half months in trial and solidified his passion for complex cases. Today, Mr. McMahon brings that same passion to his work in diverse areas including anti-competitive practices, construction, and professional malpractice, among others.

As a thought-leader in his field, Mr. McMahon is regularly invited to speak or present at various legal organizations such as the San Diego Trial Lawyers Association and the San Diego Inns of Court as founding director. He has taught for California Continuing Education of the Bar and is a lecturer at the California Western Law School on the use of expert witnesses and the art of taking a deposition. With such influence, it is important that he keep himself abreast of the new and changing laws that are constantly showing up in general civil litigation and family law. He notes:

"In particular, the California Legislature has recently codified the definition of the 'date of separation' in family law cases, an oft-litigated issue."

Mr. McMahon is also known as “The Gentleman Lawyer" for his "kill-them-with-kindness" approach to law that begins with his service to his clients and extends out to judges and fellow lawyers. While many attorneys see the practice of law as a competitive way to make money, Mr. McMahon's goal is to truly make a difference in people’s lives. As such, he treats every individual with respect and compassion and is willing to work tirelessly to find resolutions that best serve everyone involved.

This reputation is matched by the numerous awards and recognitions Mr. McMahon has earned over the course of his career. Among many other honors, he has been recognized by organizations such as Super Lawyers, the American Institute of Family Law Attorneys, San Diego Magazine, and Avvo.
