Fellowship in Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Sonography Launched

Musculoskeletal Ultrasound has opened new horizons in the health care profession dealing with the musculoskeletal and neuromuscular systems. 

Recent advances in ultrasound technology have created a functional and practical approach to evaluate joints, muscles, ligaments and even nerves. Clinical evidence and research support using ultrasound as the first diagnostic test for numerous musculoskeletal conditions. Diagnostic ultrasound offers significant advantages compared to X-Ray, CT, and MRI, regarding safety and effectiveness. Musculoskeletal ultrasound simply uses sonic waves, and there is no exposure to radiation.

At the same time, diagnostic ultrasound is noninvasive and offers real-time imaging, allowing for examinations of structures at rest and in motion. This ability to capture the movement of musculoskeletal components differentiates it from other imaging modalities and can permit more accurate diagnosis.  

While there are several continuing education training programs in musculoskeletal ultrasound, there was no Fellowship program in the U.S. until now to train health care providers extensively in this new advanced technology. Hands-On Diagnostics, a national franchise that helps Physical Therapists establish diagnostics in their facilities has now created a Fellowship program in Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Sonography. The program aside from its extensive classroom time requires the completion of over 200 sonography studies performed under mentorship environment.  Students are assigned a mentor who works with them throughout the completion of the program. "Mentorships help students become truly competent in musculoskeletal ultrasound and guarantee their success," says program director Dr. Mohini Rawat, DPT, MS, CMP, RMSK, ECS, OCS.
