MyStemKits Leverages Autodesk Tinkercad to Teach 3D Design and Modeling

With over 200 classroom kits and lessons, MyStemKits announces their first prototype kits to feature a Tinkercad open source design and modeling component.
ATLANTA - Oct. 10, 2017 - PRLog -- MyStemKits.com, the largest library of 3D-printable STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) kits and standards-driven curriculum targeting K-12 Education, is harnessing the power of Autodesk's Tinkercad to teach educators and students in K-8 modeling and design.

"We want young people to get excited about advancing technology and we believe that hands-on learning is the best way to accomplish engagement and retention. By incorporating Tinkercad, we can quickly integrate an experience-driven 3D design and modeling component into our existing kit library," says Laron Walker, MyStemKits CEO.

Initially, MyStemKits built their library of 3D-printable kits focusing on making Science and Math a hands-on learning experience. Partnering with FCR-STEM, a division of Florida State University, they paired the MyStemKits' model guides and manipulatives with FCR-STEM's state and national standards-driven curriculum. MyStemKits sought to enhance the kits' technology component and a pilot program with Tinkercad's 3D design and modeling tool seemed a natural next step. Integrating Tinkercad's popular and easy-to-use, browser-based 3D design and modeling tool lets students make code changes to the MyStemKits' models, manipulating dimensions and other design characteristics, or building their own designs completely from scratch.

Two MyStemKits' prototypes, the Wind Farm Kit and the Boats Kit, are available this month. The Carrying Cargo boat-building lesson is also featured on Instructables, an Autodesk site, as a submission to their Teacher Contest. By releasing lessons through Instructables, it effectively teaches the educators and students how to design with access to actual source files. Programs like this help students tackle real-world problems as the student balances cost constraints and finds the most optimal design. In the end, students are challenged to engineer and test their own designs, using Tinkercad to model a functional piece.

"Students want classroom involvement and our kits are already being used in hundreds of schools to teach Math and Science. By integrating Tinkercad, they can interact directly with the model design, with the added benefit of hands-on technology and engineering practice," adds Walker.
