Eye Expert Issues Warning About the Dangers Of Halloween Contact Lenses

By: Get News

Burnsville, MN – Leading optician Dr. Steve Reinders has recently issued a warning to people wanting to celebrate Halloween by inserting novelty contact lenses into their eyes. Many people love to change their eye color as part of the dressing up process of Halloween but are unaware that they could potentially be putting their eye health at risk.

Contact lenses are considered medical devices by the FDA, and as a consequence, there are a number of rules and regulations which apply to all contact lenses including those whose only job is to change the appearance of the user’s eyes. People need to understand when purchasing these types of products, particularly online that contact lenses are medical devices which come into direct contact with their eyes. If not used correctly the wearer risks eye infections, corneal damage and in the worst case scenario vision loss.

The FDA guidelines state that

  • Anyone wishing to wear contact lenses for the first time must complete an insertion and removal class, in which they must demonstrate their ability to independently insert and remove contact lenses. Other areas covered by the class include safety and cleaning guidelines. It is important to note that these classes although compulsory are not normally covered by insurance.
  • Once the lens has been fitted properly, it then needs to be checked by a licensed optometrist for proper fit, movement, lid clearance and centering on the cornea.
  • If the lens does not fit properly, a follow-up visit may be required to reassess or adjust the contact lens prescription.

Once the patient has completed the above, then their contact lens prescription is valid for two years.

“As an eye-specialist, I have huge concerns regarding the risks that people are taking buying novelty contact lenses for Halloween,” said Dr. Steve Reinders of the Burnsville optometrist office. “Your eyes are very delicate and can be easily damaged, sometimes permanently, which is why we are publicizing the issue. Buying color changing contact lenses on the internet, from unauthorized retailers is fraught with danger, and is NOT recommended. My advice, should you wish to invest in color changing contact lenses would be to contact a licensed optician and follow the correct procedures. Otherwise, you are taking a huge risk with your eyesight. I enjoy Halloween as much as anyone else, but one night of fun is not worth permanent eye damage.
