I was born and raised in Czech Republic during a communist regime. I can remember my grandma would have remedies for common aches, pains and illnesses always handy. She would have pouches of herbs in her pantry or growing herbs and foods in her garden. I do not remember ever seeing her go to a doctor or complain about being sick or in pain. I think her first major visit to a doctor was when she needed hip surgery in her early 70’s.
It was not until I came to the US, in 2003, for the first time, at the age of 24, when I started paying attention to my body. I was working as a lifeguard throughout the summer. I did not have much money so I would buy the cheapest food and ration it. Even being on a poor diet and swimming during evenings I gained about 30lbs within 6 months. I was puzzled by the change; it did not make any sense to me. At the end of that year I returned back to Czech. It was only a few days before Christmas. Without dieting or incorporating any exercising into my life, I slowly lost almost all the weight I had gained by that spring.
As it happened, I returned to the US the following year, in late spring. Things would take an unexpected turn in my life; I ended up marrying and start rock-climbing. Event though our lifestyle was pretty active I would notice that we would be sick (fighting cold or flu) pretty much every season, my old injuries would be taking toll on my health, our skin would not look healthy, our digestive system was not in the best shape, our memory was not as sharp and so on. Overall, I was starting to pay attention to what we ate and drank.
I started to track our food budget and learn about organic foods. Slowly, I replaced some foods with organic ones, we added a central water filtration system into our house and started gardening. After a year or so of eating wholesome food and drinking and using clean water, we noticed that we were less hungry and that we felt better. We were pleasantly surprised. We felt the way active 27-year old young people should feel.
I then started buying books about herbs and learning the medicinal benefits of nature. I started to experiment with herbs a few years later; it was a hobby for me at that time. I would make tinctures, syrups, infusions, liquors. I would find myself talking to people about their aches and pains, and then giving them something that would help them. Well, one day my husband asked me “Do you realize what you have been doing?” I was not sure what he meant by that. He said, “Look, you make all these ‘goodies’ and then you share them with others… A light went off in my mind about doing that for a living… The rest is history.
The company was officially incorporated about a week after my daughter was born. There were no goals, no specific plans, no business plan, no calculations…
I never dreamed I would have a growing business. After being in business for almost 3 years, I have realized that people truly love the products; the products truly work, and as more people discover that for themselves, we continue to grow. I have something good to offer to people. I can have a positive impact on peoples’ lives and I can, hopefully, leave something great behind for my children.
