The Annual Gazette-Reportage – Postdoctoral Appreciations 2017

October 20, 2017 - Washington/Hamilton - The 8th annual Postdoctoral Appreciations were conjointly marked by the National Postdoctoral Association (U.S.), the Asia-Oceania Post-Doctoral Academia and SAIRI Postdoctoral Multiversity for the United Nations’ MDGs-SDGs Studies.

The concept of ‘postdoctoral appreciations’ culminated with the passage of H.RES. 1545 by the U.S. House of Representatives, in 2010. The resolution, which was passed on September 24, 2010, recognized the National Postdoc Appreciation Week (NPAW).

NPAW-2017 was celebrated September 18–22 throughout the U.S., Canada and U.K., whereas the institutional observance of NPAW with a 30-day Post-NPAW cross-disciplinary cross-institutional Postdoc-minutes and follow-up sequels was candidly marked by the higher academic ivories of Asian and Oceanic regions.

NPAW is the largest celebration of postdoctoral community in the U.S., Canada, United Kingdom, Asia and Oceania.

Institutions and organizations across the continents hold events to raise awareness about postdocs with the goal of acknowledging the considerable contributions made by postdoctoral scholars (“postdocs”) to the research enterprise.

This year, 389 events were hosted at 114 institutions in 37 states, Asia, Canada, Germany, Oceania, and the United Kingdom.

Worldwide Institutional Observances of NPAW 2017:

The Visiting Scholar and Postdoc Affairs Program (VSPA) sponsored a reception to honor University of California, Berkeley.

In conjunction with this special event, posters representing VSPA’s various programs were on display at the reception. During the event VSPA recognized outstanding faculty mentors on campus with a Faculty Award for Excellence in Postdoctoral Mentoring. In addition to this, the Visiting Scholar and Postdoc Affairs Program announced the winners of the 2017 Postdoc Leadership Award awarded to postdocs who organized important events–networking or academic, on campus, regularly lead by example, or simply boost the morale of others with small yet meaningful gestures.

A Plenary Talk was delivered by GALLUP Director of Research Tim Hodges: Well being: The Five Essential Elements.

The University of Colorado Boulder planned flash talks of postdoc research.

With the support from the Research & Innovation Office, the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPA) awarded two Outstanding Postdoc and one Outstanding Mentor Awards during NPAW 2017.

The Outstanding Postdoc Awards recognize postdoctoral scholars who demonstrate exemplary research contributions, leadership and independent of years of postdoctoral experience.

The Outstanding Mentor Award recognizes a faculty member who provides exemplary leadership and training to postdoctoral scholars at CU Boulder.                                             

The University of Colorado Denver and Anschutz Medical Campus Postdoc Association (PDA organized a science communication event at Spangalang Brewery in downtown Denver. At this event, postdocs described their research to the audience (who will included also non-scientists). Postdocs were challenged to explain their research succinctly and without jargon – too much jargon.

Denver Museum of Nature and Science offered a “Enjoy a 21+ night at the museum, while networking with other postdocs and science enthusiasts”.

UConn Health held its first Postdoc Research Day in conjunction with postdocs from The Jackson Laboratories. This event included a series of four-minute talks from 24 of UConn Health postdocs, a poster session and a keynote address from a former UConn Health postdoc.

The George Washington University Postdoc Association (GWPA) celebrated NPAW 2017 with the GW postdoc appreciation day, a one-day event where GW postdocs were invited to present their research in a 15 minute TED-style talk (including Q&A) in front of their peers, graduate students, and faculty. The talks were judged by a faculty panel with varied research interests.

The Rush Postdoctoral Society hosted “Integrative Negotiation”. The event was presented by Joseph Bernstein, Ph.D.

Bernstein presented on general approaches to integrative negotiating approaches and skills. When a negotiation is appropriate/what can be negotiated over, how to enter into a negotiation, and how to identify the approach of the other party and move the negotiation into a more integrative framework. He debriefed a short negotiation simulation that puts the concepts from the talk into practice.

University of Indiana arranged information sessions. Members from Roche Diagnostics provided an overview of careers for biomedical Ph.D.s and postdocs available at Roche.  In addition, they also touched upon some tips for making the successful transition to industry.

To thank postdocs and postdoc faculty mentors for their efforts, the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs invited IU School of Medicine postdocs, their PIs, faculty, graduate students and administrators to the Postdoc & Faculty Mentor Appreciation Reception on September 22 in the MS Atrium. At the reception, the 3rd annual Outstanding Postdoc and Outstanding Postdoc Mentor Awards – designed to recognize and honor the achievements of both IUSM postdocs and IUSM faculty mentors were presented.

Organized by the IU School of Medicine Postdoctoral Association, the 3rd Annual IUSM Postdoc Symposium featured a keynote speaker, posters and oral presentations. Awards were given for Best Posters and Best Oral Presentation.

Biomedical IU postdocs were invited to submit abstracts for oral and poster presentations.

Kansas State University invited postdocs, to learn new skills, and to find community during NPAW.

K-State postdocs and K-State postdoc association mentors were invited to the conversation. Peter Dorhout, vice president for research and professor of chemistry, attended the event.

Guest speakers Jana Fallin, director of the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning; David Poole, professor of exercise physiology; and Zelia Wiley, interim associate provost for diversity, led a faculty application package workshop highlighting how to write a teaching philosophy, research statement, and diversity statement.

A Science Communication Workshop was held by Sarah Hancock, communications coordinator with the Office of the Vice President for Research,  helped participants build science communication skills.

Posters and Research Presentation, were held at K-State Alumni Center.

The Adelphi Laboratory Center of Baltimore hosted a postdoctoral symposium during NPAW.

University of Maryland Baltimore arranged a Postdoctoral Fellows Retreat with Keynote Speaker, Jorge Cham, Ph.D., and Babita Das, Ph.D., a former postdoc in public health who is now working for the Food & Drug Administration (FDA). She discussed her background, her experience as a postdoc and how she was able transition into a science fellowship at the FDA.

The Ethical and Inspiring mentorship in STEMM conference took place at the University of Maryland – College Park campus.

Boston University’s NPAW events took place throughout the month of September so as not to overlap too much with other programming in the Boston area.

During NPAW, a number of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) departments hosted activities for postdocs in their areas.

In celebration of NPAW, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) held a series of postdoc workshops for the postdocs, postdoc sponsors/advisors, and their families from Woods Hole’s six main scientific organizations (WHOI, the Marine Biological Laboratory, the National Marine Fisheries Service, the U.S. Geological Survey, the Sea Education Association, and the Woods Hole Research Center).

The Wayne State University Postdoctoral Association (WSU-PDA) celebrated NPAW 2017 to honor WSU postdoctoral scholars and recognize the contributions they make to the research at WSU.

Wayne State University hosted the Michigan Regional Postdoctoral Symposium on September 22, 2017.  

Michigan State University, University of Michigan, Van Andel Research Institute, and Wayne State University were among the universities/institutes attending the event. The symposium offered professional development seminars, posters, 3MT presentation competition and great networking opportunity for all attendees.

Keynote speakers at the event were: Keith E. Whitfield, Ph.D., provost, Wayne State University, and Timothy Stemmler, Ph.D., associate dean, The Graduate School, Wayne State University.

The University of Nevada, Reno Office of Postdoc Affairs hosted a reception for all postdocs on campus, following orientation.

They had speakers from the Office of Research and Innovation, university libraries, human resources, and members of the Postdoc Advisory Committee on campus.

The Center for Graduate Life at the University of North Carolina Charlotte arranged a full week of events for NPAW.

A Keynote presentation: “What Got You Here Won’t Get You There” was given by Phillip Clifford, Ph.D.

Patrick Madsen, director of UNCC’s University Career Center also delivered a talk on TBD.

Special guest speaker Joan Lorden, provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs also delivered his talk during NPAW.

In Pennsylvania at Thomas Jefferson University arranged a Keynote presentation by Janet N. Zadina, Ph.D.: The Academic Brain on Stress: Frontal Lobe Fatigue, Procrastination, and Burnout, A two-hour workshop:  Science and Strategies was also arranged.

During NPAW the postdoctoral association at The University of Vermont (UVM) presented a half day career development symposium, tailored specifically for postdocs. It included an interactive elevator pitch workshop with Erik Monsen (associate professor, Grossman School of Business, School of Engineering at UVM) and David Bradbury (UVM affiliated org employee, Vermont Center for Emerging Technologies).

Following this a career panel discussion was held with Jeralyn Haraldsen (grant proposal manager, UVM Office for VP of Research), Cathleen Geiger (research professor, University of Delaware, adjunct professor, UVM), and Paul Held (lab manager, Biotek Instruments). The keynote lecture was given by Alan Dove, Ph.D., and host of the podcast “This Week in Virology” http://www.microbe.tv/twiv/.

In Canada, The Postdoc Office at the University of British Columbia celebrated NPAW.

The department of microbiology & Immunology at the University of British Columbia organized the ‘Microbiology & Immunology Postdoc and Research Associate Appreciation & Research Night’ events in the week of NPAW.

Asia & Oceania Post-Doctoral Academia (AOPDA), SAARC-ASEAN Postdoctoral Resource Academia (SAPRA) and SAIRI Postdoctoral Multiversity for the UN MDGs-SDGs Studies conjointly conducted high level thematic discussions and mentored sessions on different areas of academic interest and cross-boundary cross-disciplinary emerging expediencies in postdoctoral research.

As outlined and demarcated by the SAIRI’s P.I. Professor Qadhi Aurangzeb Al Hafi D.Litt et Phil, the ‘Reference-line Thematic Monograph for 2017-2018’ encompassed and entailed the topics of core-expediencies, ranging from the baseline ‘normatives’ in human studies, the foundational ‘dynamics’ and standard ‘methodics’ in natural and social sciences, to the applied realm-orbs of the higher investigative segment-demesnes of human enterprise, were brought under reference-line thematic considerations.

The abstract contemplations brought forth during the Postdoc Appreciations mainly focused upon: the United Nations’ SDGs, the UN enterprises’ role in peace establishment, particularly in the poor populaces of the least developed vicinities around the globe, to the peace & conflict situations in the ASEAN and SAARC regions and their escalating effects on the whole continental zones of Asia, Oceania and the entire Middle East and particularly in SAARC and ASEAN regions.

The high level thematic discussions, mentored sessions and institutional proceedings throughout the NPAW of postdoctoral research in the Asian and ASEAN regions were held under the earnest-solemn leadership and worthy directions of  H. E. Justice (R) Dr. S.S. Paru L.L.D., D.Litt., the Chief Patron (CP) and the Chancellery Head (CH) of Asia & Oceania Post-Doctoral Academia (AOPDA), who also continues to hold the status of Chancellor Emeritus of SAARC-ASEAN Postdoctoral Resource Academia (SAPRA).

For the UN, Justice (R) Paru primes a thorough analysis and a tri-fold synthesis of the prevalent situation of ‘social injustice’ that is gradually becoming predominant in the customary frameworks of nearly every sector, segment and section of human life.

Scientific sessions and technical symposia were also a special facet of NPAW 2017, The topics were ranging from ‘Teratogenicity Research’ Pre-birth Disability Prevention Investigative Case Studies’, ‘Magneto-Hydro-Tropism (MHT)’, ‘Sub-soil Hydro-Toxicology’, Impacts of DESPO-Asia on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Strategic Frameworks, and several primary topic-ranges of academic importance including Research Methodology.

An additional extravagance of 2017’s highlight of postdoc appreciations was embraced by the 2nd  ‘Thematic Concept-Note Monograph’, unveiling the ‘Methodic Overview’ of the recently discovered phenomenon of Magneto-Hydro-Tropism (MHT-Discovery) by Professor Dr. Qadhi Aurangzeb Al Hafi (the discoverer), at the higher inter-institutional forefronts of the academic ivories of the world.

The newly discovered MHT principle has proved to be a scientific milestone and has evolved to be a ‘core-concept landmark’ in applied sciences, on which the forthcoming centuries would lay the very foundations of new scientific disciplines. Despite becoming an ‘object of prey’ in its embryonic stages, on accounts of partisan rivalry, the MHT is well paving its way forth to the destinies—it was destined to!.

Covenants, Pledges, Resolutions & Acclamations During the Annual NPAW Observance 2017:

A unanimously passed resolution has been furthered by AOPDA’s P.I., which acclaims 2018 as the Postdoc Year. Also, an annual postdoc appraisal-review encompassing the cross-disciplinary and cross-referential impact factor (CD-IF &CR-IF) has been agreed upon to be dealt-out and issued subsequently.

As the 2017 NPAW proceedings coincided with the UN designated Peace Observance Day (Sep. 21st ), AOPDA dedicated all of the core thematic-focuses to the peace related issues throughout (but not limited to) the NPAW observance.

While marking the UN ‘Peace and Non-Violence’ convergent observances days in the backdrop-milieu of annual postdoctoral appreciations (NPAW), the 2017’s historic observances candidly and unequivocally ‘marked a historic landmark’ in the wide-spectrum realms of ‘peace and non-violence’, by adopting a unanimous resolution, which acclaims ‘Rohingya University for the UN Peace Studies along with a Rohingya Holocaust Digital Repository to be established in Dubai and Singapore simultaneously.

Notably, the unanimous adoption of the resolutions to establish the Rohingya University and the Holocaust Repository came just hours before the UN Human Rights Councils Session concluded in Geneva.

During the NPAW 2017, Asia & Oceania Post-Doctoral Academia (AOPDA) extended region-wide institutional indorsements for the significant resolutions, which were drafted and steered by Abu- Mishkath Professor Qadhi Aurangzeb Al-Hafi, the P.I.H. at AOPDA and SAIRI Postdoc Multiversity. Both of the resolutions have been widely and diversely agreed upon by academicians of Asian and Oceanic regions, as well as the US, Canada and UK.

Pledge-based Title-Ovations & Institutional Endorsements:

In order to mark the UN Peace day in the backdrop of postdoc appreciations, AOPDA issued a special peace prize and scholarship for Postdoctoral Research in Peace-Conflict Studies. The worthy scholarship medals has been agreed upon to be issued posthumously, in the names of three merited adornees of AOPDA Peace Award, who selflessly strived to raise voice for Rohingya genocide prevention. The two UN officials; 1- Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein (The UN High Commissioner of Human Rights) 2- Professor Yanghee Lee (United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar). and 3- Dr. Muang Zarni (Academic Researcher and Expert on Ethnic Cleansing).

By the unanimity of postdoc academics from throughout Asia, SAIRI’ s P.I. Prof. Qadhi Aurangzeb Al Hafi has been titled as the ‘Arch-Polymath of the 21st Century’ for his distinguished cross-boundary and cross-disciplinary research services in a vast array of subjects and diverse institutional foci.

SAARC-ASEAN postdocs arranged a pledge-based panel discussion on the role that the postdocs and other academicians can play in;

• Ensuring and widening the institutional avenues and academic scopes of peace-related studies in diverse fields of higher research.
  
  
• Uplifting the level and quality of multidisciplinary research in the Asian region.

Postdoctoral Designations for 2-3 Years Term:

The National Postdoctoral Association (NPA) and the Asia-Oceania Post-Doctoral Academia (AOPDA) have designated eminent academic personages to their ‘Boards of Directors’, ‘Thematic Moderators’ and ‘International Post-Doc Panelists’ for 2 to 3-years term of service beginning on January 1, 2018. The newly designated academicians have been nominated to serve as ‘apex postdoc patricians’ in their respective regions and relevant disciplines.

Postdoctoral Designations for the U.S. and Canada:

The NPA has elected five individuals to the Board of Directors: Dr. Josh Henkin, Ph.D.; Dr. Barbara Natalizio, Ph.D.; Dr. Shakira Nelson, Ph.D.; Stephanie Eberle, M.Ed.; and Kristen Scott, Ph.D. This will be the second term of service for both Henkin and Natalizio. Scott would begin serving her term on November 1, 2017 to complete the term of Dr. Chantelle Ferland-Beckham, Ph.D.

The NPA directors were elected from a field of seven candidates during the 2017 election, which ran from September 8, 2017 through September 25, 2017.

Postdoctoral Designations for Asian and Oceanic Regions:

For a two-year term of service, the AOPDA, the SAARC-ASEAN Postdoc Academia and SAIRI Postdoctoral Multiversity for the United Nations’ SDGs Studies have conjointly designated six individuals to the Board of Directors: Dr. Martin J Haigh, Ph.D.; Dr. E. M. Nawaratne, Ph.D.; Dr. Zafar Saied Saify, Ph.D.; M. S. Salawal Salah, M.D.; Dr. E. M. Dass and Dr. Abu Said F. M.  

The Asian and Oceanic directors are designated from a field of ten nominees during the 2017 Asia-Oceania ‘Post-doctoral Medley-Assemblage Process’, which ran from September 21, 2017 through October 17, 2017.

Executive Postdoc Edifices:

The NPA and AOPDA’s Board of Directors have appointed executive postdoc officers for 2017.

They are: chair, Kate Sleeth, Ph.D.; vice chair, Yvette Seger, Ph.D.; treasurer, Josh Henkin, Ph.D.; and oversight officer, Tracy Costello, Ph.D. As treasurer, Henkin would serve as chair of the Finance Committee, and as oversight officer, Costello would serve as chair of the Oversight Committee. These four positions, along with the NPA’s executive director, comprise the Executive Committee.

Governance Committee chairs were also appointed: Barbara Natalizio, Ph.D., would serve as the Development Committee chair, and Marina Ramon, Ph.D., would serve as the Strategic Planning chair.

The Chancellor Emeritus of SAARC-ASEAN Postdoc Academia Justice (R) Dr. S.S. Paru, L.L.D., D Litt. continues to serve as the Principal Patron of AOPDA, whereas SAIRI’s P.I. Dr. Qadhi Aurangzeb Al Hafi, D.Sc., D Litt. Et Phil. and Dr. Syed Hussain Shah Jilani have been designated as the Principal Investigatory Head (P.I.H.) and Principal Academic Head (P.A.H.) respectively, for the Asian and Oceanic regions’ postdoctoral research enterprises. Dr. E.M. Nawaratne remains the Principal Strategic Officer (P.S.O.) whereas Dr. Abu-Said Ahmad Fraz and Lt. Col. (R) Azhar Saleem remain the Oversight Chair and Chief Coordinator respectively, at AOPDA and SAARC-ASEAN Postdoc Academia.
