I was lucky to meet an elder care attorney who explained to me that his work involved helping people figure out how to get medicare benefits, pay for long-term care, get veteran’s benefits, deal with special needs resources—and that fascinated me. I found a niche where I really do get to help people every day, and that’s still what drives me."

As a thought-leader in her industry, Ms. Patterson has been highly successful in her area of specialty, and maintains a unique vantage point from which she can observe trends or changes in elder law. She notes:

"People are now able to go online and buy documents as opposed to paying for legal counsel. That might save them money in the short term, but in the long term, those documents never hold up in court, and people end up spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on years’ worth of legal fees."

Ms. Patterson also maintains active involvement in her legal community, including as a member of Lawyers With Purpose, the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, and Orange County Women Lawyers. She is the author of two books, The Nursing Home Dilemma and What If?, and she maintains a free blog full of resources for her clients or anyone with questions about elder care.
