Low-cost robotic surgery training simulator unveiled at IMSH 2018

A new robotic surgery simulation tool is aimed at providing affordable training to all medical students and health care professionals
SAN JOSE, Calif. - Jan. 12, 2018 - PRLog -- Simulated Surgical Systems, a leader in robotic surgery training, will exhibit its new simulation training solution for robotic surgery in booth #926 at IMSH 2018 in Los Angeles, California. Utilizing the same physician designed curriculum as the legacy RoSS system, RoSS Lite will be the first affordable and portable option for robotic surgery training.

"Robotic surgery is the future. But even today, many medical students throughout the U.S. are not introduced to this surgical technique unless they are in a specialty residency program. There is a lack of an affordable simulator in the market. RoSS Lite could fill the void in medical education by helping more students become better prepared for residency and in the operating room", said Kesh Kesavadas, Ph.D Director of Health Care Engineering Center at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and the co-inventor of the original RoSS simulator.

The training solutions currently available in the market are bulky and are generally set up in a single location within a customer's facility. These options are limited in their mobility and are often only utilized in specialty residency programs instead of as part of a general curriculum. As robotic surgery becomes more and more mainstream, exposure robotic surgery training will likely become a curriculum requirement in medical school.

RoSS Lite will be equipped with the standard Simulation curriculum available on the full-size RoSS simulator. The full solution will include a computer installed with Simulation software suite and database, two Touch Haptic Devices by 3D Systems, and a pedal set, all packed in a military grade portable case.

RoSS Lite will become available for purchase immediately following IMSH in Los Angeles, CA. Simulated Surgical Systems will be in booth #926.

About Simulated Surgical Systems

Founded in 2009, Simulated Surgical Systems is a pioneer in the development of simulation for robot-assisted surgery. They provide affordable, safe, practical, and efficient robot-assisted surgery training solutions that can be used by novice and experienced surgeons in order to help mitigate surgical error and to make robot-assisted surgical education feasible for all.

The original RoSS™ simulator is based on extensive research conducted with collaboration between the robotic surgery department at Roswell Park Cancer Institute (Buffalo, NY) and the virtual reality laboratory at the University of Buffalo. This team combines the experiences of over a thousand surgical procedures with virtual reality medical simulation technology.

Simulated Surgical Systems also offers Hands-On Surgical Training (HoST) modules that walk prospective surgeons through recorded surgeries done by experienced physicians. Currently, these modules include Radical Prostatectomy, Radical Hysterectomy, Radical Cystectomy, and Lymph Node Dissection.
