Story telling is an essential part of humanity. Our cave dwelling ancestors told stories through cave paintings, the earliest goes back to over forty thousand years and can be found at El Castillo in Northern Spain. We do it in our everyday lives, when someone asks, how was your day? We are at the beginning of a story. We embellish and edit parts to keep our audience engaged.

Azik Chowdhury’s first novel, A Muslim Boy, follows this tradition and it may well be that others have told similar stories. But as pointed out by Azik, “every book has a story to tell, big or small, great or simple, normal or abnormal. But it’s about how the writer tells his story, and how it makes the reader feel.”

The central character in A Muslim Boy is Shanti, a Bangladeshi immigrant trying to fit in to British society, whilst juggling the traditions and values of Bangladeshi family life. The essential theme is friendship, and how this simple element allows him to reconcile the difficulties and celebrate the good with his friends. Or as pointed out by Beppe, another central character in A Muslim Boy, “without friends we becomes our own enemies; that’s how people ends up going nuts, or killing themselves, or worse killing someone else.”

There are many lessons Shanti learns, but the crucial one is acceptance of him, in every form; good or bad. And try when he can to become a better person.

The story follows a true time line, and the social events are on record in British history and newspaper reports of the time. But the story itself, it’s characters, their lives, and the events which shape them are fiction. They are taken from Azik’s observation, living in those times, and experiencing some of those events. For example when you read the chapter, Intolerance, Azik can show you the cigarette burn on his own knuckles. But on that day there was no kind lady, just friends, but they were as scared as Azik. Azik pointed out, “it was important for me to balance out that chapter with kindness, because I have also experienced a huge amount of kindness in my life.”

Azik’s story has an abundance of humour, “I wanted to ensure there was humour in the story; to me it is an important fact about life. Within tragedy there is humour. I have been at a friend’s funeral and after the service we started retelling the jokes our friend used to tell, and what made him laugh, and through our tears we found laughter. I wanted A Muslim Boy to be very much about the coexistence of joy and pain, of love and hate, of tolerance and intolerance, and finally of acceptance; of oneself and others.”

At times A Muslim Boy will shock you with its gritty unapologetic writing, and make you laugh, and cry. At its heart A Muslim Boy is a story of hope, and overcoming obstacles. It is uplifting.
