Alphabet names Stanford president as new chairman, posts Q4 loss as spending soars

Google parent Alphabet on Thursday named longtime board member and Stanford University President John L. Hennessy as its new chairman, replacing Eric Schmidt, who said in late December that he was stepping down from the board of Google's parent company to take an advisory role instead.
