Plays are a natural resource for the English language classroom. They offer opportunities to visit and revisit language in the service of communicative goals, but they do much more as well. Producing a play, even in reader's theatre format, also helps students loosen up and feel more confident about playing with language and its many possible meanings. Plays can reveal insights into the way people use fixed expressions, intonation, and gesture to convey feelings, wants, and relationships. As Alan Maley wrote in his review of the book, "Drama in the performance of texts is one of the most compelling of language learning resources. It develops pronunciation, grammar and conversational skills, provides spin-off into writing, offers unlimited repetition without boredom—and most importantly, fosters the creation of a learning community through co-operative ensemble work."
The play itself is witty and touches on a topic every student has to confront: how do you choose a future career? Aida, a high-school senior, wants to pursue a STEM major and get a job in the practical and lucrative medical field. But, her performance in a school play has caught the attention of the theatre director at a famous performing arts college. When he invites her to audition for a spot at the school, she has to make her own decision about her future. Throughout the play, the audience will laugh and relate to the father who tries to pressure her into taking a chance and the friend who doesn't think Aida knows how talented she is.
