IoT in China has been ahead of Europe and the US.

China will emerge as a leader in the global Internet of Things, according to a recent report in the “Internet of Things market barometer” by international telecommunications leader, Vodafone. Especially in the field of smart home, advantages are more obvious: At present, Haier’s intelligent life open platform has acquired 50 million online users. This figure is equivalent to 16% of the U.S. population, 60% of Germany’s population, and 98% of the population of South Korea. Industry insiders believe that open and dynamic research and development capability is the key to Haier’s global first-mover advantage in the field of smart home .

According to a research institution, Juniper Research, the global smart home market will reach $71 billion in 2018, China’s market share will be 32%. Behind the huge market is even more of a challenge: in the era of Internet of Things, the demand of users highlights the characteristics of diversity, real time and uncertainty. The traditional linear development model is unable to immediately meet the user’s personalized needs, which is one of the reasons why the concept of Internet of Things has not been triggered since the concept of the Internet of Things was proposed.

While most companies are still responding to the challenge by increasing the number of research and development institutions, Haier has been exploring open innovation models since the 1990s. By building HOPE platform, they can effectively connect innovators and world-class research and development resources to realize zero distance interaction between users and resources around the world. At present, the HOPE platform has set up an expert community of 5,000+ people and has accrued over 3.2 million individual resources. This means that any user of global demand will take the lead on this platform to monetize their efforts.

“The innovation ecology of Chinese companies is already more competitive than that of Silicon Valley.” This is the latest comment from international commercial media company, Fast Company while announcing the list of the most innovative companies in the world in 2018. Haier has been named the world’s most innovative company for the third time on this list. Relevant experts believe that an important embodiment of Haier’s innovation ability is its open and dynamic research and development capabilities, adapting to the uncertainty of the demand of the Internet of Things with open global resources.

The most intuitive manifestation of this research and development model is a complete set of smart home solutions. At Consumer Electronics Show (CES) of this year, Haier exhibited the world’s first one-stop smart solution. Different smart home appliances are connected in the Internet of Things, bringing real smart home experience to users. For example, when the user stands in front of the HiMirror, it immediately begins to monitor the user’s skin condition and provide appropriate makeup recommendations; Haier’s smart refrigerator will provides appropriate recipes, and automatically link the oven, and cooking utensils needed to prepare to cook.

“Haier’s open partner ecosystem is an open platform for both internal and external partners, who can use this platform to build relations between different partners and solve all kinds of problems,” said Gary Hamel, professor of strategy and international management at London Business School.

Larry Downes, a researcher in the Accenture Institute of High Performance and author of “Big Bang Disruption: Strategy in the Age of Devastating Innovation”, says that Haier has built an open innovation platform to find solutions to challenging technologies. After such a continuous and in-depth dialogue with the customers, the product launched must meet the needs of users.

With the support of open innovation, Haier’s smart homes are also rapidly growing. For example, GE Appliances, which was acquired by Haier, integrated the Amazon Echo function and developed the first intelligent voice-controlled kitchen. From the refrigerator, dishwasher to oven, microwave, etc., these can all be connected. Users only need to say “preheat the oven to 350 degrees” and the  wall-mounted oven  will automatically ready itself and the AI and voice control will be able to manage this.

According to relevant analysis, in the previous information technology, the United States dominated the Internet business process represented by Internet technology. Now in the age of the Internet of Things, China develops simultaneously with the United States, and even leads the world in some industries. In the international standards of IOT, China also actively participates in relevant standards establishment and has the power to make an influence. Kevin Ashton, the father of the Internet of Things, lamented in public that China had become the world’s most sophisticated Internet user. (Newly)
