Evidence-based study shows ways to reduce resentment in the workplace

Research by a Brandeis University professor shows that understanding the source opens the door to reducing or eliminating employee resentment and increasing productivity in the workplace.

Washington D.C. – Andy Molinsky is a Professor at prestigious Brandeis University. As a guest on The Road Ahead show, hosted by Jared Nichols, he shared some of his discoveries as outlined in his new book, Reach: A New Strategy to Help You Step Outside Your Comfort Zone, Rise to the Challenge and Build Confidence.

“Reaching beyond your comfort zone is hard to do, but it’s hard for a set of very predictable reasons. Once you recognize these reasons, you can start to develop a plan for addressing them,” Molinsky explained.

While the most common core challenges he’s found center around an employee’s feelings of authenticity, likeability and confidence, another key issue in the workplace is resentment.

“Some workers, particularly those who are already introverted, will silently wonder, ‘Why do I have to do this in the first place?’” If someone has the requisite skills and abilities for the job, why would they have so much riding on their ability to make small talk, socialize, or schmooze? And why would someone who can grease those social wheels end up in the fast track for promotion even though their job performance isn’t as good? This type of scenario is a typical cause of frustration and resentment.

Fortunately, according to Molinsky, these resentments are easy to overcome—by using the exercises he teaches in corporate training and in his book.

The book is based on 75 interviews with small business owners. “I even interviewed a goat farmer,” he said. Based on these interviews, he identified and broke down the five core barriers to expanding beyond that comfort zone, and developed exercises—tools—to help an individual escape from these self-imposed obstacles. And he’s found that his new approach really resonates with people.

Molinsky’s first book, Global Dexterity: How to Adapt Your Behavior Across Cultures without Losing Yourself in the Process, was about how to operate successfully outside of cultural comfort zones. With his new book, he takes it to a more personal level—and carries it into the work arena. “It takes insight, know-how and a framework to understand these roadblocks and overcome them. And if you can anticipate the challenges before they happen, you can avoid them entirely.”

Andy Molinsky is a Professor at Brandeis University International Business School, with a Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior and M.A. in Psychology from Harvard University. His research and writing has been featured in Harvard Business Review, Inc. Magazine, the Financial Times, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and more.
