Jakarta – April 18, 2018 – Cheryl Halpern is a woman of achievement. In addition to being an advocate for women’s rights and a supporter of educational initiatives around the world, Mrs. Halpern is an award winning producer and director of many inspiring documentaries. In recognition of her compelling films that have promoted dignity and respect, she was acknowledged as Tolerance Woman of the Year 2017.
This year, in March 2018, Mrs. Halpern was recognized as the Woman of the Year by the World Woman Awards. Natasha Dematra, Ambassador for the World Woman Awards, explained that Cheryl Halpern was chosen, after careful consideration, from several hundred notable women from around the world. The award was presented to Mrs. Halpern in celebration of the United Nations International Women’s Day.

Mrs. Halpern was elected to serve as the chairwoman of America’s Corporation for Public Broadcasting from 2005 to 2007. In 2008 she went on to serve as an alternate United States representative to the United Nations. From the podium in the General Assembly she addressed the inhumanity of the Holocaust and the cruelty of the mining for blood diamonds. Since then she has focused her efforts on producing films that through their compelling stories will inspire others to do good and in their own way help make their villages, their neighborhoods and their environments a little better.
Her documentary, “Fighting to be Free” tells the story of heroic young Ethiopian women; illiterate, literate, rural and urban who created a unique sisterhood as they challenged cultural norms and risked their lives in a seventeen year struggle for freedom at the end of the twentieth century. As Mrs. Halpern explains, “These heroic women are role models for all women who are facing oppression. They stood up against tyranny and risked everything to be free. That the Ethiopian Constitution guarantees gender equality is a direct credit to the efforts of these women. Through their personal commitment and perseverance they proved that anything is indeed possible!”
Family is an important part of Cheryl Halpern’s story. She is the proud mother of three children and grandmother of eleven grandchildren. “I was blessed to be born into a family that respected gender equality. There were no limitations placed before me by my parents. I was taught to start my day with a smile, to believe in myself, to pursue my goals and not to be concerned by the unfounded criticism expressed by others. This is the lesson that I would share with young women today. Remember to believe in yourself and pursue your aspirations with determination.”
The World Woman Awards (WWA) is a partner in the International Film Festival Group (IFFG) consortium that works together with the Council of Creative People. The WWA’s mission is to recognize women who have inspired others through their own personal humanitarian endeavors as well as women who have promoted, through the films they have produced, the values of dignity, civility and tolerance.
