Pediatric presentations of sleep disorders differ from adult presentations, making diagnosis challenging. Specific clinical syndromes, such as cataplexy in children with narcolepsy type 1, can have altogether different presentations compared to adultonset symptoms, contributing to diagnostic delays and potential misdiagnoses. Therapeutic delays can turn into dramatic consequences; pediatric narcolepsy limits daily activities because of excessive daytime sleepiness and cataplexy, leads to poor performance in school, and produces difficulty in social interactions. Treatment of narcolepsy in children consists of behavioral interventions and pharmacologic therapy; however, drugs approved for excessive daytime sleepiness and cataplexy in children and adolescents have been lacking. In this program, pediatric sleep disorder experts Dr. Kiran Maski and Dr. Merrill Wise will describe strategies to overcome barriers in diagnosing narcolepsy in children, and explain best practices in treatment including emerging evidence with pharmacologic therapy.
