Renowned Math Professor Konstantinos Palamourdas Helped Reduce The Rake At One Of America’s Biggest Holdem Networks

Konstantinos "Duncan" Palamourdas - a math professor with a specialization in No-Limit Holdem education - solved one of the biggest issues of gaming networks, namely how much they should charge/rake their players for playing on their website. Dr. Palamourdas helped the network (WPN) reduce their rake structure, a great win for the players and the online gaming ecosystem as a whole.

Recently, Winning Network - United States’ biggest online gaming network - discovered that their rake structure had been making it too difficult for players to turn a profit. This was brought to their attention by math professor and holdem educator Konstantinos "Duncan" Palamourdas. Dr. Palamourdas, a UCLA alumni with a Ph.D. and 2 Master Degrees in Mathematics, currently teaches holdem at UCLA Extension. His classes are always full, often with long waiting lists due to his innovative approach of using math to break down holdem strategy. Palamourdas has also authored a holdem book which is contracted to be published by 2020.

Dr. Palamourdas has been primarily using WPN as a teaching platform to simplify the complex concepts of holdem to his students and has a long history of innovation with the website dating back to 2011. Around that time, he discovered an inefficiency in the way the network was handling its games that led to many players sitting in tables by themselves and not playing one another. Dr. Palamourdas suggested a simple solution - namely limiting the amount of tables used - that could solve the problem. This immediately grabbed the attention of WPN's CEO Phil Nagy who implemented the idea right away.

Fast forward to today, and Dr. Palamourdas discovered another issue while recording a video for his students: The network's rake was just too large for any player to make a profit. After doing a statistical analysis based on significant samples, he made a scientific case to back his claims.  He then brought the matter to Phil Nagy, who once again took action immediately and reduced the rake. WPN saw the positive effect right away.

This was a pivotal moment for online networks which due to low competition have been cannibalizing on their player pool. Perhaps more importantly, other online gaming sites have taken notice and are trying to follow suit. For this reason, Dr. Palamourdas is now commonly recognized as the pioneer of "fair rake for everyone," something that has been increasingly bringing more and more attention to the industry as a whole.

In the words of Dr. Palamourdas himself, “Reducing the rake to reasonable levels is not only fair but also essential for the gaming eco-system to survive. Now all players can enjoy better odds in playing holdem, thus last longer and have a better chance to score a win or even make a profit. Observing the domino effect that this initial change has brought to the gaming industry around the nation has been one of my biggest achievement to date. That is a very humbling and rewarding feeling.”
