Siemens Celebrates Grand Opening of Pittsburgh Service Center

Siemens today celebrated the opening of the company’s new 300,000-square-foot Pittsburgh Service Center (PSC), located in Mount Pleasant. The $32 million state-of-the-art facility was made possible by a capital investment from Siemens and is home to Siemens Turbine Generator Specialty Services (TGSS), which supports approximately 150 employees working in the company’s large-scale turbine and generator business. The PSC is located on a site being redeveloped by Regional Industrial Corporation of Southwestern Pennsylvania (RIDC) in partnership with the Westmoreland County Industrial Development Corporation. The property is owned by the Pennsylvania Industrial Development Authority.

Siemens, a global engineering and technology leader, built the PSC to consolidate its Power Generation Services work, which was previously performed at two separate locations in the greater Pittsburgh area, the New Kensington Tooling Facility and Penn Hall Service and Development Center. The new facility specializes in field service maintenance, repairs, modifications and the modernization of large-scale turbines and generators for the power generation industry.

The new facility will enhance Siemens’ training, tooling and process development, resource and project management capabilities, and house its sales, marketing, and customer relationship management teams. The center will help maximize efficiency and improve tooling and processing equipment for specialty service groups, such as tooling development, light fabrication, equipment repairs, machining support, and hands-on training for employees.

Since moving into the new facility in Mount Pleasant, Siemens has formed an apprenticeship program for machining and welding students with the Westmoreland County Community College’s (WCCC) Advanced Technology Center, which is located on campus next to the PSC. The program was co-developed between Siemens and WCCC to incorporate in-classroom learning with hands-on work experience for tooling and processes used to service the power generation industry. The WCCC offers curriculum in machining, welding, mechatronics and several other industrial skills that complement work performed at Siemens’ PSC as well as in the field. To date, several students from WCCC have been hired by Siemens and have become valuable contributors to the success of Siemens.
