Published Author LaSean R Shelton, Founder of LaSean R Shelton-Awake the Champion in You, Inc. recognized that a vibrant tomorrow would begin with an energetic, effervescent colour schemed Conference committed to delivering spectacular results!
She [LaSean] reports that ambiguity, fear, grief, despair and lack of resources are the most rampant yet most taken for granted issue in many Communities, especially in Wilmington DE. Over the years, Shelton witnessed some of her students struggle with the lack of basic necessities such as food, clean clothing, and adequate resources.
Realizing that fixing the root (guardians) and offering hope with re-engineering mindsets and offering literacy focused on credit repair, starting a business, becoming an author and community leadership could possibly trickle down to her students, their communities, prevent catastrophic debacles, break generational curses and shatter their ceilings of defeat and complacency.
After being fed up with the lack of solutions, chicanery displayed on various leadership levels and frustration with the lack of change, Shelton used her expertise, desire for change and desire to help and countless hours to fuel her wildly enriched passion to develop SYC'19, her first Conference of that kind.
Feeling nervous and seventy-eight tickets later, Shelton gave herself permission to be vulnerable and ask for help to have her dream come to fruition, and with help Dr Alex Ellis, Kiera Williams, Sue Bennett, Melissa Holmes, Jeffrey Grimes, Ty Whittaker, Shalakemia Moffitt, Michelle Ross, Nicole Gannon, and Keith James, the event was sold out.
Shelton was adamant about the SYC'19 being a well thought out and transformational event, everything including the event colours had to be special in order for people to feel connected, inspired and inclusive.
Each table was gifted with swag bags, souvenir journals, balloons, ice breakers, and pens all colour coordinated and the cups had written affirmations on the bottom so when guest drank from their cups, someone was given a compliment when they saw the bottom.
Nelly Birthright was the MC for the event and gave attendees a special welcome and vision for the SYC'19, Shelton read a dedication to slain rapper Ermias Joseph Asghedom "Nipsey Hussle" as the Community Leadership award was named after him.
Melissa Holmes (NYC) and Calvin Thomas (NC) spoke from the floor while Ajawavi J. Ajawon (DE), Alma Thomas (NYC), Justin T. Hall (ATL), Jacob Alexander (SC), Khadijah Haywood (MD) and Nelly Birthright (DE) had panel discussions on specific topics.
Dr Alex Ellis was a showstopper, he had attendees standing all over the building and committed to shattering their personal ceilings! His delivery was effervescent and geared giving yourself the authority to change and be your best!
Awardees were surprised when their names were read, despite having mounting support from their peers, family members, loved ones and Organization members--we shifted through 8k plus votes and the following men and women won:
