Cambridge's Newest Think Tank: Creating a Bridge Between Academia and Industry

By: Issuewire

CCIR supports researchers at the University of Cambridge by helping them build relationships with industry.

Cambridge, Apr 28, 2020 (Issuewire.com) - The Cambridge Centre for International Research (CCIR), based in Cambridge, UK, was established to give the industry a better understanding of cutting-edge academic research, while at the same time providing solutions to the challenges faced by the industry through the research of academics. In the past, despite the University of Cambridge's active engagement with industry and the sponsorship of many Fortune 500 companies to support the research, there is still a large proportion of important and meaningful research that has been overlooked by the industry. In recent years, with the specialization in the field of scientific research, the distance between academia and industry has become more and more distant.

To address the disconnect between academia and industry, CCIR supports researchers at the University by helping them build relationships with industry, supporting their research, and conducting relevant conferences. At CCIR, the researcher has absolute academic freedom and collaborates with scholars in other fields. Faculties of law can work with lecturers in the computer science department on artificial intelligence and public policy, and sociologists can work with professors in statistics. In the meantime, CCIR plans to hold a series of conferences over the next year to encourage scholars to publish successful inter-disciplinary collaborations and inspire more innovative and impactful research.

"Our most important mission," the public relations director of CCIR told reporters, "is to enable academics to do the research they want to do, and to enable that research to solve social problems. More than having scholars publish papers, we want to know how these studies make our world a better place."

In addition to this, CCIR focuses on the development of young scholars. Ph.D. students and postdocs from the University of Cambridge can be seen in various projects, creating opportunities for research, teaching, and collaboration with industry.
