The 35-year New Jersey home health care agency, the garden state’s leader in live-in home care, had earlier completed a phase 1 expansion of its NJ caregiver services in Middlesex, Mercer, Monmouth, Ocean, Somerset and Union counties.
“The coronavirus has wreaked havoc throughout the United States and continues to, but we’ve seen a particularly devastating effect here in New Jersey,” said Frank Esposito, vice president of Expert Home Care, which is headquartered in New Brunswick, NJ. “As a result, we’ve been forced to ramp up quickly due to the increasing need for home health care services in many parts of the state.”
New Jersey has been a state hit very hard by the coronavirus pandemic, suffering more than 11,000 deaths. Like elsewhere, those most affected by the virus have been older and infirm residents. Senior housing and care facilities, such as assisted living and nursing homes, where residents often gather together closely for social, leisure and recreational activities have been especially hard hit.
That’s why it’s hardly a surprise that studies show an increasing number of people in New Jersey are choosing home care over institutionalized care for aging seniors. Many report being concerned about the safety of their relatives living in residential senior housing.
Long-term care facilities, not unlike cruise ships and meatpacking plants, are viewed as virus incubators. Residents, who are older, frail, and often have multiple health issues, are more susceptible to infections carried by other residents or aides who may or may not be symptomatic. In addition, with restrictive visitation policies in place at most long-term facilities in New Jersey, residents often lack the social connections they crave.
As a result of the increased demand for senior care at home, Expert Home Care of NJ has implemented the phase 2 expansion of its home health care services in Essex, Mercer, Morris, Bergen, and Sussex counties. Additional expansion is being considered by the home health agency.
Already the most preferred option of caring for aging seniors, selected by as many as ninety percent of families, the preference for home care in New Jersey has grown substantially during the COVID-19 crisis. Each year roughly twelve million aging and infirm people, many with chronic underlying health problems, depend on some form of care at home. This is according to the National Association for Home Care and Hospice.
In its expansion, Esposito discusses the importance of having Expert Home Care caregivers closely follow the strict CDC guidelines. This includes the use of gloves and masks, regular hand washing and making sure temperatures are measured and their general health assessed daily.
