Lulu's "To Sir, With Love" Gets Remade and Re-Imaged with Animated Message of World Healing Through Music

By: Issuewire

New York City, Jul 30, 2020 (Issuewire.com) - "To Sir, With Love" was a hit 1964 pop ballad introduced in the film of the same name by Britain's Lulu. The lovely ode to mentorship has been covered many times, by the Jackson 5, Al Green, the TV show "Glee" and now by Keira Wesley, accompanying animation by Louis Lubega. Originally imagined as a song for Sonic Comfort, an Alzheimer's fund-raising event extolling the mind's retention of music and featuring songs from the Baby Boom era, chosen to honor the elderly, it has evolved now into a celebration of music as a healing force for all.

Where the original had a lyrical early 60s power ballad feel Keira's version by vision and arrangement of producer Shedrick Mitchell (Whitney Houston, Maxwell) is contemporary and jazzy, breezier, less insistent, less a laudation to a single teacher and more a homage to anyone who's ever widened our horizons. Keira's voice is beautiful and her stylizing has the right mixture of youthful innocence and adult yearning the song requires. In the video's simple broad-lined animation Music pours out of a piano, takes human shape and is made incarnate as a healing imp appearing in hospitals to children and the elderly, to protestors and police, leading everyone in rapturous movement and eventually onto a sort of intergalactic (or, at the very least, international) Peace Train. Whatever side of whatever line you're on music moves you as well as your opponents -- and can't we all build from there? It's a lovely message.

In 2020 we find ourselves literally separated from each other, politically, spiritually as well as physically, and we feel the gulfs. The music won't solve all our problems, but it's a powerful retentive experience, remembered even by those who have forgotten their names. The love and hunger for music be implanted deep in our minds. Music can be joyous when solitary but in a crowd, it can be transformative. Sharing music encourages empathy, it makes us out of many ones. And our country could use a little E Pluribus Unum right now. ~ Charlie Mount

ABOUT THE ARTIST, Keira Wesley: the COVID-19 shut down the entertainment industry, Keira, who has never taken the conventional route, had just begun to transition from behind the scenes, on multiple platforms, to the stage, as a recording artist. As a singer/songwriter, she has been storing up melodies and lyrics for decades, which proves melodically stimulating as to depict one of her original songs titled, "Melodic Stimulation," the only dance track on her debut album. The balance of her album, Sonic Comfort, a lyrical amalgam of her eclectic experiences wrapped in vocally rich tones across folk, pop and a sprinkle of R & B with a serene vibrato that gives each track a childlike sincerity. There are four original songs on the album and two remakes, both from the 1960s era.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER, Shedrick Mitchell: Jay Z, Maxwell, Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston, Pattie LaBelle, Yolanda Adams and Roberta Flack (the shortlist). He matriculated through the prestigious Mannes School of Music in New York and later earned a Masters in Music Composition.
