The borders have been closed to non-essential travel for several months now. Beginning in March, the US/Canada border was closed to help stop the spread of COVID-19. In a similar fashion, international travel, unless essential or intended to return an individual to their home country, has also been fully restricted.

After months of near-lockdown conditions and a summer destined to be the summer of social distancing, Okanagan residents are looking for ways to get away from it all.

As indicated by a mass increase in RV sales, starting back in April, people are finding a new way to travel and still social distance. Many Kamloops and Okanagan RV dealerships have reported an increase in sales for several months in 2020 over previous years during the COVID crisis.

Mike Rosman RV, an RV dealer in Vernon is looking forward to new stock arriving soon as they’ve sold a lot of units this year to those looking to explore the great outdoors.

“It’s been a very busy season,” stated Jacquelyn Rosman, General Manager at Mike Rosman RV. “We’ve seen a very condensed season with a lot of people buying earlier in the year due to the pandemic. People have cancelled cruises and flights and are instead making the decision to buy an RV. As a consequence, we’re seeing a dramatic increase in first time RV buyers who maybe wouldn’t have bought an RV if the situation had been different.”

As an added challenge, many RV manufacturers were also impacted by COVID, having to halt production. With an increase in demand from dealerships, manufacturers are now struggling to keep up.

“Supply is certainly challenging,” stated Rosman, “because it impacted manufacturers and there’s such a high demand for product.”

With campgrounds booking up quickly and more and more people boondocking at rec sites, there’s sure to be further demand for RVs as the year progresses. If for no other reason than people still want to travel and take a break from everyday life.
