Tampa Electric today announced that the Tampa Convention Center will participate in the company’s Networked Demand Response program for business customers. Tampa Electric is the first utility in the Southeast to partner with EnerNOC (NASD:ENOC), a leading developer and provider of clean and intelligent energy solutions, to implement the program. Networked Demand Response, approved by the Florida Public Service Commission (FPSC) in September, will provide Tampa Electric the capability to reduce electricity demand by up to 35 MW during times of peak energy demand.
Tampa Electric President Chuck Black said, "As we look for more ways to work together with our community to improve the area's environmental profile, we must remember that the cleanest kilowatt-hour is the one we do not produce. By participating in our energy efficiency programs, customers like the Tampa Convention Center are helping us conserve energy while they save on their monthly electricity costs."
EnerNOC will also provide the Convention Center with comprehensive energy management information, which will allow it to optimize its energy consumption and better manage its overall demand.
"We are very pleased to have been selected for inclusion in this environmentally friendly program," stated Robert Rose, Director of the Tampa Convention Center. "The energy management data will help us to become more efficient in controlling our electrical usage."
EnerNOC, working closely with Tampa Electric, will manage peak demand by making the program available to commercial and industrial customers. Participating businesses agree to reduce their power consumption during unusually high peak times through measures such as dimming lights, reducing air conditioning/heating, or limiting the use of manufacturing or distribution equipment. The company expects to have 25 MW under management in July 2008.
The reduction in energy demand helps lower system peaks and mitigates the need to build new power plants. Networked Demand Response also supports Florida’s green initiatives by acting as a clean energy resource that can lower overall demand.
In addition to the Tampa Convention Center, Rooms to Go, Mainsail Suites, Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel, Tampa Bay Water and Green Fiber are a few green-minded businesses that are participating in the program. “EnerNOC has helped businesses across North America become better energy consumers, generate additional sources of cash flow and become responsible corporate citizens by implementing sound energy practices,” said Tim Healy, chairman and CEO of EnerNOC. “Tampa Electric has a long track record of forward-looking energy policies, and we’re proud that it’s chosen EnerNOC to spearhead this valuable program.”
Tampa Electric began its conservation program initiatives in the late 1970s, prior to any federal or state energy conservation requirements. The company continues to promote conservation to its customers through various existing programs, including its Home Energy Audit, which identifies energy consumption problems, heating and cooling rebates and ceiling insulation programs. From 1981 through 2007, Tampa Electric's conservation programs have offset the need to generate enough electricity to serve 609,000 average size homes over a 12-month period.
Tampa Electric offers the following commercial conservation programs that provide incentives for installing various types of high-efficient equipment:
- Commercial Cooling program – including increased incentives and expansion to include larger units
- Commercial Energy Efficient Motors program that will provide $2.50 incentive per horsepower for energy efficient motor upgrades
- Commercial Energy Audit
- Commercial Ductwork Repair
- Commercial Building Envelope - Solar Window Film, Ceiling Insulation, Wall Insulation
- Commercial Lighting
