Deutsche Bank Championship Launches Environmental Initiative

Fans attending the Deutsche Bank Championship this Labor Day weekend can feel good about the events environmental sustainability. Thats because the Championship has launched an environmental initiative, including a commitment to make it the first carbon neutral event on the PGA Tour.

This year the Championship will implement an extensive recycling program and enlisted many of the Deutsche Bank Championships Founders Club partners and vendors to take additional steps to minimize their impact on the environment. The golf course on which the tournament is played is also ecologically advanced.

Because it is not possible to entirely eliminate the environmental impact of the event, Deutsche Bank and the Championship are investing in carbon-offsets to finance programs that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an amount that is estimated to be equal to those generated by the event. The program, which was validated by environmental consulting expert EcoSecurities, will make the Deutsche Bank Championship the first carbon neutral event on the PGA Tour.

Deutsche Bank has long been committed to environmental sustainability, so it was natural to extend that commitment to the Deutsche Bank Championship, said Seth Waugh, CEO of Deutsche Bank Americas. Golf is a sport enjoyed in natural surroundings, and our goal is to continually reduce the environmental impact of our event, and to offset any remaining impact, so that the Championship can be enjoyed by generations of fans to come.

We have made significant strides in how the Deutsche Bank Championship approaches the issue of protecting and preserving the environment, Championship Director Eric Baldwin said. We understand how important it is to be good stewards of the earth, and the Championship and all of our Partners and vendors encourage our fans to join us in this effort.

The environmental improvement most noticeable to fans will be the new on-site recycling program. The Deutsche Bank Championship will partner with Waste Management and Anheuser-Busch to recycle aluminum and plastic bottles. Fans will also notice that daily pairings sheets, thousands of which are handed out each day, will be reduced in size by half and printed on recycled paper. In addition, the program will be printed on a combination of recycled and environmentally certified paper.

The Deutsche Bank Championship also enlisted the support of the many other vendors it relies on each year to take steps to reduce their environmental impact. CAT Power, which supplies all the power generation on-site during Championship week, has switched to ultra low sulfur diesel. Boston Coach, which provides spectator transportation for the Championship, uses motors that operate on ultra-low sulfur diesel, which reduces emissions, and/or bio-diesel fuel. The bio-diesel fuel is made of renewable resources and has no sulfur and reduced nitrogen and carbon footprints.

The Deutsche Bank Championships Founders Club partners also encourage and support environmental sustainability. The Boston Globe includes prints on recycled paper in its print run and uses soy-based color recycled ink. Its delivery trucks use a blend of bio-diesel. Dunkin Donuts, which broke ground on its first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified restaurant, has partnered with ride-sharing community NuRide to offer participating commuters an opportunity to earn points for the rides they share and redeem them for Dunkin Donuts rewards. Stop & Shop will provide recyclable and reusable bags for distribution of thousands of volunteer uniforms.

Buick, which provides hundreds of vehicles for player and Championship staff transportation, will provide a fleet that includes the Buick Enclave, which has better highway fuel economy than any other 8 passenger SUV1 and two GMC Yukon Hybrids that will be featured in our VIP transportation shuttles.

TPC Boston is adjacent to 150 acres of local conservation land donated by the development partnership of the club to the towns of Norton and Mansfield. The golf course was designed to compliment its natural surroundings. There is a dedicated effort to preserve and enhance the environment by managing grassland and forest edges for the benefit of wildlife around the golf course. The foundation of environmental stewardship begins with utilizing natural products like composts and organic fertilizers that are recycled from biosolids, poultry litter, wood and paper. This practice helps achieve the building of quality soil, which allows the club to judiciously use water and other resources for due to improved plant health. The club has been the recipient of 3 Golf digest ELGA chapter awards for environmental stewardship.

The 2008 Deutsche Bank Championship, which features a $7 million purse and a $1.26 million winners check, will take place August 26-September 1 at TPC Boston in Norton, Mass. It is the second of four stops in the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup and will feature the top 120 golfers on the PGA TOUR.

About TPC Boston

Originally designed by legendary player/designer Arnold Palmer, TPC Bostons award-winning layout was re-designed in 2007 by celebrated golf course architect Gil Hanse, with PGA TOUR player Brad Faxon serving as a consultant. The result is a compelling par-72, 7,241-yard masterpiece named by Golf Digest the Best Private Remodel of 2007.

Crafted to fit seamlessly into the natural New England landscape, lush fairways and Bentgrass greens traverse gently rolling hills, with stands of mature trees, chocolate-drop mounds, numerous wetland areas, fescues and native grasses, and 92 deep bunkers creating a stunning backdrop for this superb test of golf in Nortons Great Woods. While challenging enough for the best players in the world during the Deutsche Bank Championship, five sets of tees on each hole make the course enjoyable for golfers of all skill levels.

At TPC Boston, remarkable golf is just the beginning of an outstanding PGA TOUR experience.
