Cold Star, Inc. Selects The Answer for Complete Line of Bulk Dairy Dispensing Systems

Cold Star, Inc., a leading distributor of bulk dairy dispensing systems, will now offer its complete line of dairy creamers and coffee-based beverages using The Answer™, a proprietary dispensing technology available exclusively from International Dispensing Corporation (IDC) (IDND.PK).

The Answer™, which prevents microorganisms from compromising product safety, nutrition, and taste during prolonged, repeated use, will replace Cold Star’s existing dispensing technology for the company’s refrigerated dairy and non-dairy creamers, half and half, two percent and whole milk, and coffee-based beverages. It will also be used to dispense a new line of Cold Star ready-to-drink teas and juices targeting health-oriented consumers. The Answer™ will be applied directly to Cold Star’s patented bag technology, creating a closed system that is impervious to bacteria, user and operator friendly, and environmentally more desirable compared to other beverage packaging formats. The disposable flexible package will service the more than 20,000 Cold Star dispensing units throughout the United States and Canada.

“This is a substantial development for IDC and represents a major commitment in bulk shelf-stable packaging,” says Greg Abbott, founder and chairman of International Dispensing Corporation. “Cold Star is a pioneer and leading player in dairy dispensing, and a perfect partner to take full advantage of our innovation and launch it in a number of interesting directions.”

Cold Star offers foodservice operators both ultra Extended Shelf Life (ESL) dairy products with a 90-day shelf-life and shelf-stable products that can remain unrefrigerated prior to opening for 180 days or more. The Answer™ is the only dispensing tap on the market that can withstand the rigors of ESL and aseptic irradiation required of bag-in-box packaging.

“The Answer™ offers a unique array of product benefits that make it an ideal fit for Cold Star’s bulk dairy dispensing system,” explains Hanlon Harris III, President and CEO of Cold Star. “Our customers expect the highest level of safety, convenience, and flavor from our dairy products and The Answer™ helps us deliver on that promise.”

While Cold Star’s bulk dairy dispensing systems are refrigerated, The Answer™ can maintain product sterility and freshness after opening even while unrefrigerated, a fact that was highlighted in the March 2008 Journal of Food Protection. In tests simulating a worst-case scenario - i.e. dispensing at ambient temperatures in highly unsanitary conditions simulating sabotage - The Answer™ was proven to maintain sterility of growth-promoting liquids for a minimum of 25 days. Under normal ambient conditions, it maintains sterility for a considerably longer time.

In addition, a recent independent Life Cycle Analysis conducted by Allied Development has scientifically measured that a flexible package with The Answer™ utilizes substantially less greenhouse gases, energy, and landfill than competing beverage package formats.

Cold Star will offer both a low and a high flow-rate version of The Answer™ in its bulk dispensing systems, depending on product.

Cold Star bulk dairy dispensing systems are available for convenience stores, highway rest stops, quick-serve and fast-casual restaurants, schools and higher education institutions, hospitals, and office coffee service across the United States and Canada.
