Interop Technologies Answers Capacity Demand with Future-Proof SMSC 4 Series Messaging Solution

Interop Technologies, a provider of core solutions for messaging, device management, and connectivity gateways, today announced that it has once again broken a messaging throughput record with its innovative Short Message Service Center (SMSC) 4 Series. The improved technology solution now can provide a throughput level of 100,000 Message Delivery Attempts (MDAs) per second, which surpasses the 53,000 MDAs per second that Interop achieved in April 2009. Still the fastest messaging solution in the industry, the SMSC 4 Series now is even further ahead of the competition.

Leveraging knowledge gained from hosting messaging services for multiple network operators, as well as listening to customers’ requests, Interop optimized the code base of the SMSC 4 Series and enhanced required services and system components to ensure maximum throughput and efficiencies. The resulting leap in throughput is expected to help operators relieve messaging capacity constraints.

Built with modular, distributed architecture, the extremely robust Interop SMSC 4 Series delivers unlimited scalability for today’s high volume and availability requirements. The SMSC 4 Series fits within a very small, energy efficient footprint that reduces real estate requirements and power consumption.

Industry analysts cite network capacity as a top concern for operators in 2010, and text messaging volume is now greater than voice traffic. According to a recent forecast issued by Portio Research, “Global SMS traffic alone exceeded 5 trillion messages in 2009, a total expected to double by 2013.” The firm reported that more than 4 billion subscribers now have embraced texting.

The Interop Technologies SMSC 4 Series reduces the need for operators to worry about mounting messaging volume. One Interop SMSC 4 Series delivers enough throughput to send a text message to every person in the United States in one hour or to every individual in the world in one day. Running at a sustained peak of 100,000 MDAs per second, one Interop SMSC can send 360 million messages per hour or 8.6 billion messages per day—exceeding the current world population of 6.7 billion people as estimated by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Realizing that operators are planning and building 4G networks, Interop designs all of its solutions to support both legacy and IP-based technologies simultaneously, allowing for the deployment of next-gen technologies while maintaining seamless operation and preserving messaging ubiquity during the transition phase and beyond.

Interop Technologies has commercially deployed the SMSC 4 Series for wireless operators as well as new-entrant cable TV operators. The complete SMSC 4 Series technology solution provides “five-nines” (99.999 percent) reliability.

Interop offers the SMSC 4 Series in four flexible deployment options:

  • Hosted—Shared technology in a highly cost-effective, service bureau environment
  • Modified hosted—Deployed with no capital expense at the network site and managed by Interop Technologies
  • Turnkey—Purchased outright for on-site deployment
  • Turnkey with managed services—Purchased outright with operations and management by Interop Technologies

Unlike other hosting companies, which can only provide long-term hosted solutions, Interop helps operators adjust quickly to changing business needs and SMS volumes. Interop can easily migrate text messaging services from its hosted solution to its turnkey SMSC 4 Series solution—with no change in technologies or tools. This capability greatly reduces technology and financial risk for operators.

“Operators are setting their course for the Internet protocol future, and Interop Technologies is on the forefront of this movement,” said John Dwyer, President and CEO, Interop Technologies. “By making our solutions future-proof, we help operators extend the life of their investments and enable them to take advantage of evolving market opportunities.”
